VERDI'S "IL TROVATORE"
Il TrovatoreIl Trovatore (The Troubadore) brings Opera Fort Collins' favorite performers together for a fiery production of Verdi's epic tale.

Performing in this concert version of the famous opera are Charles Taylor , Brian Stinar, Stacy Canterbury, and Shannon Magee, alongside Opera Fort Collins apprentice Artists from Colorado State University.

Noting the difficulty of the opera, the great tenor Caruso one said, "All you need is the four best singers in the world!" We certainly think this cast can handle it!

The collaboration, conducted by Wes Kenney, brings out the best and is a season must-hear!

MUSEUM SUPPORTS NEW ORLEANS CLEAN-UP PROJECT
Mel Chin's SafehouseOn Friday, April 3, the opening of the new University Art Museum was marked by a lecture from visiting artist Mel Chin. Chin, an artist and activist, spoke about his new project called OPERATION PAYDIRT/FUNDRED which supports implementing a solution to lead-related health issues challenging post-disaster New Orleans.

FUNDRED SampleThe FUNDRED Website states that "The FUNDRED DOLLAR BILL PROJECT is an innovative artwork made of millions of drawings. This creative collective action is intended to support OPERATION PAYDIRT, an extraordinary art/science project uniting three million children with educators, scientists, health care professionals, designers, urban planners, engineers and artists.

Together they are working to make safe the lead polluted soil of New Orleans....Once FUNDRED reaches its goal of 3 million artworks, a specially retrofitted armored truck, running on straight vegetable oil, will be deployed across the nation to pick up the 7,000 lbs. of FUNDRED DOLLAR drawings. FUNDRED guards driving the armored truck will deliver the art currency to Washington D.C., where we will request from Congress an "even exchange" of 300,000,000 FUNDRED DOLLARS for $300,000,000 in funds and services to support the implementation of OPERATION PAYDIRT'S solution to lead-related health and quality-of-life issues still challenging post-disaster New Orleans."

Pickup PlanWe encourage the Fort Collins community to take part in this project and assist Rocky Mountain High School which is taking a central role as a pick-up site for the FUNDRED truck.

With a push to increase community participation through the fall, come to the University Art Museum, located in the University Center for the Arts on Remington Street. The museum will provide FUNDRED templates and deliver your art work and your voices to the high school.

The University Art Museum is open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. All programs and exhibitions are free.

CSU BENEFACTOR
Lilla B. Morgan
This year, many events and exhibitions at the University Center for the Arts were sponsored by the Lilla B. Morgan Fund. Who is Lilla B. Morgan, and why is she so generous?

Lilla Graham (Bryan) Morgan was the wife of Colorado State's eighth president, William E. Morgan (1949-69). As a true first lady of Colorado State, Lilla Morgan contributed to the cultural vitality of the campus and community, a lifetime commitment she shared with her husband. She realized the importance of surrounding communities to know and understand its University neighbor, and she worked tirelessly to support and advance that goal.

A consummate hostess, Lilla Morgan also served on the city's Designing Tomorrow Today committee, and through that role she played an important part in the design and construction of the Lincoln Center, which opened in 1978.

After her death, the Lilla B. Morgan Memorial Fund was established at Colorado State to provide funding for special lectures, exhibitions, performances, and artwork at the University. Examples of uses include visiting and guest lecturers or artists, purchases of art and rare books, landscaping, exhibits, performances, scholarships, awards, and many other uses that enhance the cultural awareness of the CSU community.

In his memoir, Visionary Leadership, written with the assistance of Connie Pfeiffenberger, Bill Morgan wrote: "Lilla was a learned woman who appreciated the fine arts and literature of the masters. She had a good mind and was very thoughtful of others. ... She loved Colorado and Fort Collins and never wanted to leave, even though we had ample opportunities that probably would've been more remunerative."

A quick scan of CSU's archives reveals a small sampling of worthy projects funded or supported in part by the Lilla B. Morgan Memorial Fund:
  • Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition
  • University Art Museum
  • Avenir Museum of Design and Merchandising
  • Climate Change speaker series
