NEWS & EVENTS
Month Year
Greetings!

Thank you to everyone who helped the School of the Arts welcome the Casavant Organ to its new home in the University Center for the Arts this past weekend. The sold-out festival was very special, with powerful performances and touching tributes to Emeritus Professor Robert Cavarra. We are grateful to the Cavarra family, not only for their continued support of organ studies at CSU, but for their friendship as well.

This coming weekend is the opening of the very beautiful fairy tale La Cenerentol (Cinderella) by Gioacchino Rossini, presented by CSU Opera Theatre. Enjoy special themes, including a book drive and a dinner package collaboration with Café Vino.

Next Monday, don't miss a special Virtuoso Series Concert with CSU faculty Janet Morrow-King, Mezzo-Soprano, in her final recital before she retires this spring.

And please give a standing ovation to the Theatre Department as they took home
first place in every category at last week's Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

We look forward to seeing you at the UCA soon!

Sincerely,
Jennifer Clary, Director of Marketing & Publicity

OPERA THEATRE PRESENTS LA CENERENTOLA (CINDERELLA)
La Cenerentola
CSU Opera Threatre explores the comedy and deep pathos of the storybook tale of La Cenerentola (Cinderella) by Gioacchino Rossini. Considered one of his finest vocal compositions, Opera Theatre portrays Cinderella in a whole new light. The production, under the direction of Voice faculty Tiffany Blake in her debut at CSU, is Rossini's adaptation to the classic fairy tale, presented in Italian with English supertitles.

Tiffany Blake"This is a wonderful, funny, and beautiful piece to direct," says Blake. "The singers are full of energy and enthusiasm, and have a good feeling for the characters they're portraying." "Everyone has grown up with the story of Cinderella," says Blake. "To bring it to the stage set to the fantastic music of Rossini is exciting. There are many opportunities to explore both the outrageous humor and deep pathos of the piece."

Special nightly themes couple with each performance. A book drive takes place each night, and the drive will benefit Invisible Children, a non-profit that provides resources to children of Northern Uganda. The book drive matches the theme of storybooks, which is paralleled by the stage design; each night the donated books will be placed on the bookshelf of the set.

Cafe VinoOther special events include the Opening Night Gala and Silent Auction, Prospective Student Night with Talk-back, Café Vino Dinner Packages, and a Music Education Advocacy day complete with a Pre-Matinee Tea with Cinderella herself. READ MORE

CSU WINS KENNEDY CENTER THEATRE FESTIVAL AWARDS!
The Distance from Here
CSU Theatre is proud to announce that The Distance From Here was the regional winner at the annual Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) last weekend.

The Distance From Here
, by Neil LaBute, is an intense look at the dark side of American suburbia and was performed at CSU last fall. Pending the conclusion of the eight regional competitions, four productions will be invited for a final performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Selections will be announced next week.

Said Theatre Division Director, and Distance director, Walt Jones about the festival experience, "The audience was super supportive and nice to the performers, stopping them [during the festival] and sitting down to talk with them about it. On the night of the performance, the audience was alternately cheering, laughing, crying and then leaped to their feet 'just like they do in the movies' I heard someone say."

The celebrating continued when CSU Theatre Major Erin Fried won the Irene Ryan Acting Competition, a scholarship audition that celebrates the nation's finest student actors and the craft that enables them to create compelling and truthful characterizations. Actors competed in two (2) two-person scenes and a monologue or song. Fried, and her partner Sean Cummings, now advance to the final round at the national level in Washington DC. "Erin is floating two inches off the ground," said her professor and coach, Walt Jones. READ MORE ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

Additionally, junior performing arts major Christina Fontana won one of only two stage management awards; in Tech Olympics senior performing arts major Annaleigh Timmerman won the fastest knot-tying event; and for the fifth time, CSU took home the Golden Hand Truck award recognizing the most efficient load in and esprit de corps.
