The best-loved CSU football cheer, "I'm Proud to be a CSU Ram" (repeat many times...), echoed in my head last Thursday night after the University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Wes Kenney with guest pianist Andreas Klein, wowed a full house with a stunning and emotional performance. The School of the Arts is truly proud of our students' talent and work ethic - I hope you experience it soon. Cheering encouraged!
The Division of Theatre presents Neil LaBute's The Distance from Here - a tough production about the harsh underbelly of human nature - playing Wednesday through Sunday this week only. Your chance to win tickets is in this week's Trivia Contest. Don't miss the next installment of the Virtuoso Series with Michelle Stanley, flute, and preview October's jam-packed event schedule.
Sincerely,
Marketing and Publicity Director, School of the Arts |

THE DISTANCE FROM HERE
by Neil LaBute
Directed by Walt Jones
No American playwright has written more compellingly about the subtle ways in which people inflict pain on each other than Neil LaBute. His films, In the Company of Men and Your Friends and Neighbors, both gained critical renown for their biting satire and caustic wit. The Distance from Here (2002) is another take on the harsh underbelly of human nature. In this intense look at the dark side of American suburbia - a suburban wasteland of white trash in the Northwest that follows the mundane, incestuous, murderous life of an emotionally impoverished family - Mr. LaBute has written one of his most riveting plays.
Says Director Walt Jones, "Between the 'ums' and 'whatevers', LaBute creates an America we fear is out there, perhaps even glimpse from time to time, but quickly put out of our minds. The Distance from Here shows those of us living in Fort Collins in 2008 that this America is not as far away as we think."
Matt Block, Colorado State University senior, takes on the role of the lead character. Says Block, "[Darrell] is much more insecure about life than I, and also he treats people far worse than I ever would...I look forward to exploring the differences in Darrell's character and think that it will be enjoyable to play a character that is unfiltered, untamed, and unapologetic."
