NEWS & EVENTS
Greetings!

As I walked into the University Center for the Arts on the first day of school last week, I paused to remember the thousands of students who have also entered through the building's majestic pillars on their first day of school...excited, nervous, full of anticipation about the upcoming year. I remembered my own time here as a Fort Collins High School student and smiled! We welcome back our Music, Theatre, Dance and Art students and wish them a rewarding and happy year!

In this newsletter Dr. Michael Thaut, Co-Director of the School of the Arts, sends a special greeting, read about CSU faculty successes and recitals, CSU Theatre presents an intricate and sobering play by Neil LaBute, the Weekly Trivia Contest is back, review the upcoming events list, and finally, we ask you to please support our wonderful advertisers and sponsors.

Sincerely,

GREETINGS FROM THE DIRECTOR
Dr. Michael ThautDear Friends, Sponsors and Alumni,

On behalf of the School of the Arts I welcome you to this historic Grand Opening season. Please share the special excitement this year holds for us all!

The new University Center of the Arts (UCA), in the renovated Old Fort Collins High School, provides a new home for our School. The UCA is a true world-class facility, uncomparable in its comprehensive design to support all art forms. This campus allows us to build our School of the Arts to new levels of national and international excellence, as well as offering a cultural center to the Fort Collins and Northern Colorado community.

I am excited to share my thoughts with you about our 5 theatres, our remarkable season of exciting performances, and the student fees, private donations, sponsors and supporters that make it all possible. I invite you to meet your friends and family in "UCA Town" - our neighborhood - and celebrate with us "A New School, A New Building, In A New Century."

Michael H. Thaut
Co-Executive Director, School of the Arts
Chair, Department of Music, Theatre and Dance

CSU THEATRE PRESENTS
The Distance From HereTHE DISTANCE FROM HERE
by Neil LaBute
Directed by Walt Jones

No American playwright has written more compellingly about the subtle ways in which people inflict pain on each other than Neil LaBute. His films, In the Company of Men and Your Friends and Neighbors, both gained critical renown for their biting satire and caustic wit. The Distance from Here (2002) is another take on the harsh underbelly of human nature. In this intense look at the dark side of American suburbia - a suburban wasteland of white trash in the Northwest that follows the mundane, incestuous, murderous life of an emotionally impoverished family - Mr. LaBute has written one of his most riveting plays.

"DUO FRANCOIS" SUCCESS IN MEXICO
Ron Francois & Silvana Santinelli
CSU Piano Faculty Silvana Santinelli and her husband, CSU String Faculty Ron Francois, the International Duo Francois, return from Mexico after a series of successful musical events this summer.

Following a recital hosted by the El Paseo Arts Foundation Festival in South Padre Island, Texas, the Duo Francois performed in concert at the University of Veracruz in Xalapa, MX. "...The level of artistry and talent is first class playing...", "...An energetic ensemble..." were some of the comments made by teachers and 'aficionados' in attendance.

Violinist Ronald Francois opens his 2008-2009 concert season on November 15th performing with the Longmont Philharmonic Orchestra. Francois will also be the featured soloist with the CSU Symphony Orchestra in February 2009.

Later this year, Silvana Santinelli premieres her first CD featuring the Piano Works of Mexican composer Rodolfo Halffter; the performances will be held in Washington DC at the Mexican and Spanish Embassies.
