These are busy days at Colorado State University as faculty and staff across campus prepare to welcome students to the 08/09 academic year. And perhaps no where on campus is anticipation for the first day of school more heightened than for the School of the Arts where, for the first time in CSU history, music, theatre, dance and art students will come together to study and perform under one roof. The Grand Opening year of the University Center for the Arts is here!
In this installment of the School of the Arts newsletter explore "Meet Me at the UCA", the Fall '08 Performance Season, read about the origins of the new School of the Arts symbol, tour the new facilities, and learn about the CSU/Opera Fort Collins Apprentice Artists Program in conjunction with the production of La Bohème.
We look forward to meeting you at the UCA this fall!
Sincerely,
Marketing and Publicity Director, School of the Arts

| NEW SCHOOL OF THE ARTS IDENTITY |
|
To celebrate the Grand Opening of the multi-million dollar renovation of the old Fort Collins High School, the School of the Arts has a new symbol. On the new construction exteriors and throughout the interior spaces, Slaterpaull, the project architect, repeated the original, leaded windowpane motif in their design. The use of the "divided square" motif effectively ties the old to the new, reflecting upon the unique and wonderful history of the building, while moving forward with its second life as the University Center for the Arts. "The motif is a strong symbol that appropriately represents the departments and divisions that make up the School of the Arts as a whole," says Linny Frickman, University Art Museum Director. The new identity will be used throughout School of the Arts' online sites and printed pieces in conjunction with the Colorado State University logo. |

| CSU APPRENTICE ARTISTS; OPERA FORT COLLINS LA BOHEME 2-FOR-1 OFFER |
Fort Collins Opera begins its 29th season with one of opera's most popular and beloved classics, Puccini's La Bohème. This timeless story has been retold throughout history, most recently with the hit musical Rent.
Singing in this quality, family friendly production, and as part of the OFC Appentice Artists Program, are current CSU Master's of Music in Vocal Performance student Tracy Kaufman as Musetta the singer, and 2008 Master's Graduate, Devon Shaff as Schaunard the musician. Last year the Apprentice Artist program was established between OFC and CSU where students can earn a Master of Music in Vocal Performance at CSU while singing in the main stage productions and the Educational Engagement program with OFC. This is a highly competitive program, and is the only one like it in the state, and one of only a handful in the nation.
Performances are held at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center at 417 West Magnolia Street, Fort Collins, 80521. To purchase tickets, call the box office at 970.221.6730, purchase in person, or buy them online at www.lctix.com. For 2-for-1 ticket voucher, click here. | |
| CHARLEEN B. FLOOD
MEMORIAL RESEARCH FUND |
The Colorado State University Center for Biomedical Research in Music has been named recipient of the Charleen B. Flood Memorial Fund for the advancement of Neurological Music Therapy research focused on Parkinson's disease in the amount of $50,000.
"We are extremely grateful and honored to be the recipient of this fund which allows us to broaden our research into neurologic music therapy and rehabilitation for patients with Parkinson's disease. We never met Charleen while she was still alive, but we have met her husband, Donald L. Flood, Col. USAF (Ret), and children who carry her legacy forward in beautiful and powerful ways. They are a truly remarkable family. We hope that more people will feel inspired by the Flood family's gift and donate into the fund. That is the expressed hope of Don Flood who wants to see their gift as a seed that continues to grow," says Michael Thaut, Center Director and Co-Executive Director, School of the Arts. Read more
