Los Angeles Greek Film Festival Announces 4th Annual Orpheus Award Winners
Plato's Academy | Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (LAGFF) announced its 2010 Orpheus Awards winners following last night's closing night awards ceremony and gala. Los Angeles Greek Film Festival continues to celebrate its passion for the arts, cinema and culture while gradually bridging the gap between Greek filmmakers and Hollywood. During this year's impressive Line-Up, LAGFF presented 7 feature films, 5 documentaries and 5 shorts, including 2 world premieres, 11 US premieres and 4 LA premieres to enthusiastic audiences during the 3-day Festival.
Dogtooth | This year's Orpheus Awards ceremony was kicked off with a live performance by Greek singing sensation Alexia Vassliou followed by the opening remarks from LAGFF Co-Founders Angeliki Giannakopoulos and Ersi Danou. LAGFF 2010 Orpheus Awards show host Patricia Kara of Deal or No Deal, began the evening's awards ceremony by inviting accomplished writer, producer and director Penelope Spheeris to the stage to present this year's Orpheus Award for Special Achievement in Film to multi-festival winner DOGTOOTH (Kynodontas) directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, which made its LA Premiere at this year's Festival. The Festival's five-member jury - which includes industry professionals Chantal Chauzy, Michael Economou, Lane Kneedler, Bill Krohn, and Gary Mairs - were responsible for selecting the Orpheus Award winners for the categories Best Documentary, Best Short and Best Feature films, and were then brought up to the podium to announce this year's winners. The Orpheus Award for Best Feature went to PLATO'S ACADEMY directed by Filipos Tsitos, a poignant often funny portrait of racial tension that examines Greek attitudes to the immigrant influx in what used to be a homogeneous society.
Colossi Of Love | The Best Documentary Orpheus Award went to director Nikkos Mistriotis for COLOSSI OF LOVE, a film about the 'Kamaki' men whose mission was to court and conquer female tourists of Greece, in the 70s and 80s. The Best Short Film Orpheus Award went to THE CHARMER OF GRAMMOS by Vangelis Efthymiou, a film that follows an aging hunter philosopher as he searched for honey and explores the impact humans have had on some of the most important players in our environment. LAGFF also presented Audience Choice Awards to PLUNDER FROM A BLEEDING LAND by Takis Papayiannidis (Documentary), and 4 BLACK SUITS by Renos Haralambidis (Feature). Oscar winning director Alexander Payne (SIDEWAYS) then took the stage to honor veteran cinematographer Phedon Papamichael (3:10 TO YUMA, W) with the Festival's Orpheus Award for Career Achievement. Papamichael took the stage to a swell of applause filling the Egyptian Theatre to accept this Career Achievement Orpheus Award, which celebrates the passion of his professional achievements in the fields of directing, cinematography and his continued support of the entertainment arts.
