ANGELES, CA, July 5, 2008 - The 2nd annual Los Angeles Greek Film
Festival (LAGFF) announced its award winners with EDUART directed by
Angeliki Antoniou as the winner of the Orpheus Award for Best Feature
and Best Direction. Nicos Liguris' THE LOVERS FROM AXOS was selected
as Best Documentary. A Special Jury Award was given to Dora
Masklavanou's COMING AS A FRIEND, as well as Greg Takoudes' UP WITH
ME. Audience Awards went to Katerina Evangelakou's FALSE ALARM for
Best Feature, Alexandre Papanicolaou and Emilie Yannoukou's RESURFACE
for Best Documentary and Yiannis Bougioukas' THE CUP for Best Short.
The Jury Orpheus Award for Best Short Film was awarded to TRANSIT,
directed by Yiannis Gaitanidis.
The
E! Network's "Daily 10" Debbie Matenopoulos presided at the Closing
Night Ceremony. Olga Malea's LITTLE GREEK GODFATHER closed this year's
film festival. The movie was based on an autobiographical short story
by Nicholas Papandreou, established writer and son of former Prime
Minister Andreas Papandreou. It was filmed on location, in various
villages around the Hania area of the island of Crete and at the
historical house of Georgios Papandreou in Kastri, Athens. The
director Olga Malea and actors Tex Pardue and Manos Garvas were
present. Peter Bogdonavich presented an Honorary Orpheus Award to
legendary Gena Rowlands. Seymour Cassel presented the Honorary Award to
acclaimed production designer Phedon Papamichael who was not able to
attend from Greece. His award was accepted by close family friend Nick
Cassavetes. John Aniston, Michael Constantine, Barbara De Fina, Kary
Antholis, and George Chakiris also presented awards.
The
opening remarks of Greece's General Secretary of Information Panos
Leivadas, under whose auspices the Festival was created this year,
kicked off the evening's festivities. The second year festival enjoyed
enthusiastic audience attendance and full theatres throughout its
five-day run, with screenings held at the Egyptian Theatre, Linwood
Dunn Theater, Spielberg Theatre at the Egyptian, and Pacific Design
Center.
LAGFF
showcases new films from Greece, Cyprus, and filmmakers of Greek
descent worldwide. Over thirty feature films and documentaries, many
US premieres, played within the five-day Festival. LAGFF promotes and
nurtures Greek Cinema while bridging the gap between Greek filmmakers
and Hollywood. The Festival also offers screenings of film masterworks,
seminars on important contemporary film issues, and tributes to
significant filmmakers and performers. Orpheus Awards are given to the
most outstanding new films in the dramatic, documentary and short film
categories.
