Hello
Welcome to the latest newsletter from Luminate.
I recently attended a seminar where Gill Fielding was speaking. Gill found fame on the Channel 4 TV programme 'Secret Millionaire'. For those of you not familiar with the programme it entails some of Britain's wealthiest people going undercover in deprived areas of the country to find out who would benefit from their financial support.
Gill is a multi-millionaire who started off from very humble beginnings and on the TV show she donated over £200,000 of her personal money to people - the largest amount that had been donated on the programme up until that point.
During the seminar she shared many insights and one in particular I had heard before but had forgotten about - it is crabs in the bucket syndrome.
Please read on to find out more...
Warm Regards, Nicola

Crabs in the bucket syndrome |
|
|
The story that Gill shared was about how crabs react when they are collected and put into a bucket. It goes something like this...
If a single crab is put into a bucket (without a lid) it can, and does, escape.
Put this same crab into the same bucket with other crabs and it doesn't escape.
If the crab attempts to make a climb for freedom the other crabs pull it right back into the bucket. It appears that if one crab tries to elevate itself out of its situation the other crabs drag it right back down to suffer the same fate as themselves.
Apparently crabs have a reason for doing this, by pulling their (so-called) friends back into the bucket they are trying to preserve the gene pool!
Well what has this got to do with us humans? |

Who's in your bucket? |
|
| The story of the crabs in the bucket is used to describe social situations where a person might be attempting to better themselves and their peer group try to pull them back down to their level.
Do you know anyone who has crab mentality?
Have you ever tried to create a better future for yourself and had those around you try to pull you back into the bucket?
Or perhaps the crabs in your bucket stop you from even contemplating climbing out to experience a different perspective?
It is important to note that the other crabs in the bucket are probably unaware that they pull each other back from escaping. Even if they are aware, they almost certainly believe that they are doing it with honorable intentions! |
