Come
Support Mixed-Income Housing at City Hall on November 19th!
Join community, religious, and labor leaders and
other Housing LA supporters on Wednesday, November 19th from 8:30 - 10am at a
joint meeting of the Housing, Community, and Economic Development (HCED) and
Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committees to show our support for a
strong mixed-income housing ordinance.
On
October 1st, Councilmembers Ed Reyes and Herb Wesson introduced a
motion calling for the Planning Department to prepare and present a citywide mixed-income
housing ordinance. At the joint
HCED/PLUM Hearing, committee members will be directing the Planning Department
on what should be included in the ordinance.
Come tell LA City Councilmembers that too many
ordinary people - school teachers, security offices, hotel workers - cannot
find housing they can afford. Los
Angeles needs a strong mixed-income
housing ordinance that will build affordable homes for people from all walks of
life!
These meetings are usually held on the 10th
floor of City Hall in Room 1010, but the room is subject to change if there is
a large turn out expected.
For more information or to confirm that you will be
in attendance please contact Eric Ares at - eares@scanph.org. We thank you for your
support and look forward to seeing you on November 19th!
Homes
for All Summit
Calling the cost of homes
and apartments unacceptable, more than 300 union and community members joined
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, LA City Councilmember Herb Wesson, CountyFederation of Labor Executive Secretary-Treasurer Maria Elena
Durazo for Housing LA's "Homes for All Summit" on September 27th.
Community members, union
workers, grassroots organizations, religious congregations, and politicians
from all different pockets of the city came together in solidarity for more
affordable housing and for a Mixed-Income policy for Los Angeles.
Addressing the summit were
community and union members across the income spectrum that face the Los Angeles stubborn housing crisis every day. One story came
from Justice for Janitors member Blanca Flores, who has been cleaning office
buildings for 15 years, but in order to make the high rent, doubles up with her
sister's family in a one-bedroom apartment.
"Too many ordinary people
-- hotel workers, schoolteachers, computer programmers, carpenters --
cannot find homes they can afford. Even with home prices and interest rates
falling, people still can't afford to buy or even rent a decent home," said Tom
Walsh, President of UNITE HERE Local 11.
LA Councilmember Wesson and
Mayor Villaraigosa committed to working with Housing LA to pass a mixed-income
housing ordinance in Los
Angeles. Two
days later the Mayor unveiled his Five Year Housing Plan which includes a new
mixed income ordinance for the city as well as plans to protect rent-controlled
apartments in the city.
The same week
Councilmembers Wesson and Ed Reyes introduced a motion calling for a mixed-income
housing ordinance.
The Housing LA campaign has gotten a lot of
momentum and over the next few months we will be asking our friends and allies
to come out and show support. Now is the time for us to turn up the heat to
ensure that we pass the strongest mixed-income housing policy possible!
