City Council Majority has signed the Housing LA
Pledge
This past Friday, July 18th, Councilmembers
Richard Alarcón and Janice Hahn signed the Housing LA - LA Voice Housing Pledge
at City Hall. Their two signatures push our total to nine City Councilmembers
who have signed the 4-point pledge, giving us a majority in the council. In
signing, Alarcón and Hahn commit to champion the creation of a mixed-income
housing policy, preservation of existing affordable housing, permanent sources
of funding for the Housing Trust Fund and tenants rights education.
Richard Alarcón (District 7) and Janice Hahn
(District 15) join their fellow Councilmembers Garcetti, Huizar, Perry, Wesson,
Greuel, Reyes and Rosendahl in pledging to work with Housing LA to address the
housing crisis in Los Angeles. Now with a majority of
the City Councilmembers supporting Housing LA, we are as confident as ever that
we shall soon achieve the passing of a mixed-income housing ordinance in Los Angeles!
City Council Begins Hearings on the Draft Housing Element Calling
for a Mixed-Income Housing Ordinance and Policies to Protect Rent-Controlled
Homes
We strongly encourage all Housing LA supporters
to be at City Hall Room 350 at 2:00pm on Tuesday July 29th for a very important
joint PLUM (Planning and Land Use Management) and HCED
(Housing, Community and Economic Development) Committee Public Hearing regarding the Draft
Housing Element (2006-2014).
Recently the City Planning Commission
strengthened the Draft Housing Element by making a number of significant,
positive amendments to the document due in large part to the efforts and
testimonies of various Housing LA members and supporters. These
amendments include a call for the passing of a mixed-income housing ordinance
by the end of 2008 and polices that protect rent-controlled homes from
demolitions and conversions. Before heading to full city council for
approval, the draft will be heard before PLUM/HCED.
The hearing is our opportunity to show city councilmembers community support for our strategies to produce and preserve affordable
homes. This is our chance to get these
strategies into the City's housing plan for the next 6 years.
We ask all of you to come to the joint hearing
to support the current Draft Housing Element and to encourage the members of
the PLUM/HCED committees to keep the positive changes we won and to further
strengthen the plan. Please contact Eric (213.480.1249 x254) for more
information or if you are interested in testifying at the public hearing.
