Six Councilmembers Pledge
to Fight for Affordable Housing
Housing LA is very excited to announce that 3 more LA City
councilmembers have signed the pledge to support our fight for affordable
housing in LA joining the ranks of Councilmembers Perry (CD9), Wesson (CD10)
and Garcetti (CD13).
The Housing LA-LA
Voice pledge includes the Housing LA 3-point Plan as well as a commitment to
tenant's rights. On May 14th Wendy
Greuel (CD2) became the first councilmember from the Valley to sign the pledge,
setting the bar for her Valley colleagues.
After hearing powerful testimony from LA Voice clergy
and lay leaders on May 28th, councilmembers Reyes and Rosendahl also signed the
pledge. This brings to six the number of
councilmembers who have signed on to fight for tenant's rights, mixed-income housing, funding
the Housing Trust Fund and the protection of existing affordable homes in
LA.
We are very excited that the
momentum is building among our elected officials, and would like to congratulate
LA Voice and their leaders for playing the key role in this victory!

No on 98!
With the June 3rd elections quickly approaching, housing
advocates all over the city are busy at work educating and mobilizing voters
against Prop 98.
Proposition 98 is a deceptive measure. It claims to provide
protections against eminent domain, when in reality its goal is to eliminate
rent control and otherwise severely curtail protections for renters as well as
make it illegal for LA to have a mixed-income housing ordinance. Prop 98 thus attacks two parts of the Housing
LA plan to preserve and produce Affordable homes.
Join the fight to defeat Proposition 98 by spreading the
word, volunteering your time phone banking at the County
Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO (contact Larry Gross at 213.252.4411), or
precinct walking with Coalition LA (contact Bilal Ali at 213.637.0313).

Housing Element
Testimony
On June 12th and June
26th from 8:30 to 11:30 am
the Los Angeles Planning Commission and the Affordable Housing Commission will
be holding hearings on the Housing Element draft. Housing LA and our partner organizations have
been hard at work analyzing the draft of the Housing Element to ensure the
strongest possible plan for our city.
The Housing Element is an important opportunity to forge a coordinated
housing plan that includes a mixed-income housing ordinance and stronger
protections for existing affordable homes in LA.
Since most of us don't have time to read the 200 page draft,
Housing L A is holding a briefing for our steering committee and working group
members and their community leader.
We encourage everyone who plans to comment
on the draft, in writing or at one of the hearings to come to the briefing on June 9th at 6:00pm held at Public Counsel (610 S. Ardmore Ave, 90005). We will be focusing on how to
successfully communicate the need for more affordable housing and the Housing
LA 3-point Plan to city officials at these hearings. Please RSVP with Yelena at (213) 480-1249
x253 for the briefing.
