Residential Hotel Ordinance

Residential Hotel Ordinance

After two long years, the draft of the Residential Hotel Ordinance has finally been released and the next hearing on the ordinance will be held in the HCED next Wednesday, April 16th at 8:30am, City Hall Room 1010.

The Residential Hotel Ordinance is an important piece of legislation protecting residential hotels - the housing of last resort for many people - from being demolished or converted to condominiums.  Passing a strong ordinance has been a main part of our platform around preserving the affordable homes we already have.  We are asking you to come in solidarity and/or to give testimony in support of the ordinance with recommendations.

Stay tuned for more updates and an upcoming Residential Hotel Ordinance hearing in front of the full City Council, we need your support to get this passed.

Housing Element Draft

The draft of the Housing Element (a part of the city's General Plan) has been made public and will be presented for citywide comment throughout the month of April.

The first of the hearings is focused on the Central City and will be held this Saturday, April 12th at 9:30am.

Download a copy of the workshop schedule to see when a hearing will be held in your area.

The Housing Element outlines how the City of LA plans to meet its housing needs in the future.  It is imperative that community members give testimony on the need for affordable housing in their neighborhood and the viability of the proposed plan for affordable housing development in their specific area.

Density Bonus Coverage

Recently Beth Steckler of Livable Places was featured on KCRW's Which Way L.A.? in support of the need for affordable housing, in defense of the recently passed Density Bonus Ordinance (SB 1818) as a tool for getting more affordable homes built, and on the importance of using this moment of a real estate slowdown to implement other policies that will ensure that more affordable homes are built during the next real estate boom.

March to the Docks

As part of the 3 day LA County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO Hollywood to the Docks March that will be taking place April 15th-17th, many of our community partners including ACORN and Coalition LA will be raising the importance of affordable housing for the workers of our city.

At 3:15pm on Tuesday, April 15th
, marchers will join with members of community organizations for a rally and press event highlighting the increasing difficulty of finding decent, affordable housing in LA - and the impact this situation has on workers and average LA residents. The event will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 3651 S. Vermont Avenue
.
