Greetings!
I have two great announcements in today's newsletter:
1. The winner of the InterSystems Student Programming Competition. 2. The next Globals Competition begins this Thursday.
 InterSystems Student Programming Competition
The winner of the 2012 InterSystems Student Programming Competition was Henning Jahn from Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz in Germany. Congratulations, Henning! I had the pleasure of meeting Henning at this year's InterSystems Global Summit in Orlando, Florida. Henning attended many of the sessions at the conference, met some of our developers and partners from around the world and rode the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios. He was presented the InterSystems Student Innovator Award by Robert Nagle, InterSystems Vice President of Software Development and he and his university each received $5000USD.
Name of Application: Bewidata Search Engine Description: "The solution is a sophisticated object retrieval system. Its purpose is to improve the usability of Caché applications. It provides a "Google-like" functionality; one text field is used to retrieve all the data the user wants. Influenced by the huge propagation of internet search machines, this is the way most people expect and want a search engine to work. More than that, it is also the fastest way to retrieve data as the user doesn't have to be concerned with where the data may be stored, navigating to the corresponding searchform, etc." I will post more details and comments from the judges about his application and the runner-up shortly on the competition site. Our 4th Globals Programming Challenge
Please forward this information to your students. What is the Challenge?
Each InterSystems Globals Challenge is a competition in which members of the Globals Community try to develop the best solution-application using our Globals database within a specific time frame. To see some examples of our previous challenges, please visit the "Specifications" webpage. Details on challenge #4 will be released once the challenge starts, at 6pm EDT on March 29th. The challenge lasts 7 days, until 6pm EDT on April 5th. The Globals Community judges and votes to determine the winner. What can you win?
- $3,500 USD.
- Press release by InterSystems announcing the winning participant and their solution.
What is the Globals database? Globals is a free NoSQL database from InterSystems that anyone can use. Globals is the technology at the core of mature InterSystems products such as Caché and Ensemble. While many of our InterSystems Campus members use the Caché database for its object-oriented and/or relational features, Globals does not include these features. Globals offers flexible multi-dimensional arrays for storage. These can be used to model any or all of the common NoSQL database use cases. For more information, read the FAQ. Please let me know if you have any questions about either competition.
