In this newsletter our feature article spotlights our very own Scott Hughes (trainer), and members, Trish Zuccotti and Pat Hackett at the National Masters Weightlifting Championship. We congratulate Trish and Pat on winning gold in their respective divisions!

ZUM Members Win National Masters Weightlifting Championships
Perhaps you've seen them in the club, throwing heavy weights over their heads. Zum members Trish Zuccotti and Pat Hackett won gold in their respective divisions of the National Masters Weightlifting Championships held April 9-11 in New York City. Pat also won the Best Lifter trophy in her age group. Although this was Pat's first national competition, Trish is now a 4-time national champion.
The sport of weightlifting consists of two exercises, the snatch and the clean-and-jerk. "Beyond the obvious strength and flexibility required, I am just fascinated by the mental aspect. It takes complete focus to perform a lift; and if you don't think the weight will go up, it won't go up. It's that simple." said Pat.
Both women are trained by Scott Hughes, the 1992 Drug-free National Powerlifting Champion and the 2005 Lightweight National Strongman Champion. Scott's calmness and understanding of each individual's needs, and his ability to be there 100% for his athletes, allow them to perform at their best under pressure.
Next stop for Trish and Pat is the World Masters Weightlifting Championships to be held in Ciechanow, Poland, this fall. Trish won the Worlds in Hungary in 2008, setting three new world records, and said, "It is just an unbelievable thrill to win at the Worlds and hear the United States National Anthem played."
