June - July 2009

Greetings!

Winter is well upon us isn't it? I do find it amazing how quickly the weather can snap to being so cold and it seems it's now here to stay.

If you are struggling to keep warm, try two layers down the bottom instead of all the garb up top - it's a Chinese medicine thing but it really works - we are supposed to resemble nature - warm and cosy at the bottom of the mountain aka your feet and cool headed at the top - like a snow covered peak. Many of us are cold footed and hot headed, so lets look to change that this winter and feel warmer in our own skins than ever before.

This month you'll discover a yummo winter warming beef broth to cook (as well as a vego alternative). You'll find out about research into acupuncture for depression during pregnancy. There are five fab tips to help your baby through a cold and there is some interesting info on your fertility and the link to your mind.

Skip to your section, with an approximate read time of one minute each, you'll fly through it.

All the best to you for health and happiness,

Warm up with this delish winter casserole

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This will benefit your Kidneys and Jing (the superannuation of your body's energy) and will make for a hearty meal to share between friends and family around the fire. Winter is a Yin time of year, being cold and often wet so it's a good idea to balance yourself with this Yang stew. You'll feel it warming you from the inside out and it will hopefully make an impact on those chilly feet and hands which women so often suffer with. Now is not the time for salads my friend - leave them till spring!
:: Beef Broth :: (see vego option below courtesy of Tina!)
Courtesy of The Tao of Food by Richard Craze and Ronijay. You'll need two and a half hours for this one but it's totally worth it.
:: Ingredients ::
4 tsp plain flour
Salt and pepper to taste
450g braising steak, cubed (or ˝ cup of kidney beans and ˝ cup of your favourite lentils)
1 tbsp vegetable oil
3 cups peeled and chopped carrots
550g swede or your favourite potatoes peeled and chopped
4 celery stalks chopped
225g small onions peeled
1 clove garlic
600ml vegetable stock
Grated zest and juice of one orange
150ml red wine
2 sprigs of rosemary to garnish
:: Method ::
Preheat oven to 170 degrees Celsius. Season the flour with salt and pepper and toss the beef through it till coated. Heat oil in a large casserole dish (Le Creuset is my fave), add the beef and cook until brown - remove then from the pot. Add the carrots, swede or potatoes, celery, onions and garlic and sauté for about five minutes. Return beef to the pot and add the hot vege stock, orange zest, juice, wine and rosemary. Bring to the boil then cover and cook in the oven for about two hours. Serve garnished with some more rosemary.
I cooked this recently and it was tops.
Research into acupuncture for pregnancy related depression
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It's common to hear of women getting the blues after their little one is born but even that takes most women by surprise despite the level of exposure it has now. However, it's fairly common to suffer from some degree of depression whilst you're still pregnant and so it's good to know that help is at hand.

According to the Psychiatric Times in New York acupuncture is a real contender to help women who are suffering from depression during pregnancy however more research is needed in the area.

Basically a study was conducted where 61 women were randomly put into three different groups, one group received acupuncture to specifically treat their depressive symptoms, another group received general acupuncture with no goal and the other group received massage. All women had 12 sessions over an eight week period for 25 to 30 minutes each. Patients who responded well to this were then treated for ten weeks post partum.

At the end of the acute phase, (there is no mention of how long this is) response rates were significantly higher for the specifically treated acupuncture group (69%) than for the non specific group (47%) and for the massage group (32%). At postpartum, all groups had a significant reduction in depression symptoms. However, the remission rate was significantly higher in the specifically treated acupuncture group (86%) than in the non specific group (50%) and in the massage group (67%). The authors suggested that acupuncture may be an effective non pharmacological treatment for depression during pregnancy.

Babies & Children's Health

What you can do to help them when they have a cold

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's the worst isn't it - they can't blow their nose and you can't do it for them. Arhhh the dreaded cold - but it helps to know what you can do to help. Here are five ways to ease their discomfort:
1)      Use a humidifier with eucalyptus to help them breathe more easily. In winter time you've most likely got a heater going in the room which warms it up and dries out the air. This can make it harder to breathe as their little body will want to moisten their airways creating more mucus on top of what it's already creating to get rid of the virus. Putting more moisture into the air will lessen their body's need to create more and hopefully you'll both get a better night's sleep.
2)      Facial massage after a bath from the top of the nose at the sides below the inner canthus of the eye and then out in a 45 degree angle towards the corners of their lips will help to improve their breathing. Massaging down their back and down their chest will help their Lung Qi to move down and not up if they are coughing. Try using sunflower oil but test a patch on their skin for an hour before you use it regularly to see if they are allergic - most likely they won't be.
3)      You can tap on their Lung 7 (near styloid process on inner arm near their wrist) and Kidney 6 points (inner ankle) - see the pics. These will help their immune systems to fight off the virus and strengthen GB21 face ontheir bodies to heal themselves. You can use the smooth part of a ring that is precious to you. Make sure the ring is held between your thumb and the tips of your first three fingers. Your child should only feel your fingers but the metal should be touching their skin also. This is a Shonishin technique (Children's non-insertive acupuncture) that is kinda hard to explain in words but I'm giving it a try as it works really well when done properly. You want to tap in a soft rhythmic motion up and down about ten times on each point - do this on both sides of their body for as long as they have the cold.
4)      If they are old enough you can have them on a pillow so that their head is higher than their body, this will help to drain the mucus away so they can breathe more easily. If they aren't old enough you can also try saline solution up their nose to help dissolve the mucus - babies often hate receiving this however it can be beneficial at times.
5)      If they are over one-year-old and they have a persistent cough - and probably a sore throat - then you can give them Chinese herbal cough mixture that I always keep in stock - it is amazing stuff that works very fast - and it's for adults and children so all can benefit. See what this mum said about it: "The cough syrup I bought from you has been AMAZING.  I've tried several types of herbal / homeopathic etc cough syrup and this is the only one that has worked pretty much instantly.  I would like to get some more from you for my friend who has a little girl with a persistent cough, and for my next door neighbour."
If they have been battling the cold for over a week, consider bringin them in for some acupuncture treatment as it will help their systems to become stronger to fight the virus. At their tender age it's good to let them first deal with it themselves but there does come a time when they may need some help so it's good to know where you can find it!
Pre-conception care, Pregnancy,
Parenting & your Mind
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What you think in the months BEFORE your egg is released and sperm fully made, will have just as much of an impact on your future child as your mental health throughout your pregnancy and your child's first two years on this planet. So before they have even been conceived, you are having an impact on their life. Oh the responsibility - as if you needed to hear this!

Studies have shown that genes respond to environmental factors which switch them "on" or "off". This means that so-called hereditary traits will not necessarily come into play unless the outside environmental factors stimulate them. And this outside stimulus could be you and your mind.

So if you are leading a stressful life that is related to work, your baby doesn't realise that it's not a real physical threat to be stressed about and so they go about making all the hormones and processes to be able to "cope" with this impending stress on the "outside" once they get there. It's actually ecological genius - your baby is getting ready for the environment it needs to face so there are no surprises when it comes out. Only problem is, we don't live in caves anymore and the physical stresses of fight or flight are virtually non-existent. So if this sounds like your life - better take a rain check on your chronic stress and start having the life you wish your baby to be born into.

And this is where acupuncture comes in! Here at Rebecca Mar Young Natural Health, we can help you do de-stress and figure out what is setting you off so that it doesn't become the environment your baby grows in or is born into.
This is quite a juicy topic and my newsletter is not the place for a big discussion on it so if you are interested in this stuff click here to read about Bruce Lipton - the microbiologist who is bringing all of this into the light and who will amaze you with the implications of our actions before conception as well as right through to your bubba's first two years of age. You thought because they couldn't remember anything it was all good - this will make you think again!!!
