Price changes for 2008
Greetings!

Welcome to the third edition of the all-things-pregnancy-and-baby-related newsletter and a very happy summer to you!

This month you'll read about how morning sickness can be effectively treated, you'll discover why couple counseling is a good adjunct to fertility treatment andyou'll discover a gentle yet powerful style of treatment called Shonishin that treats and improves the health of your children.

The acupressure workshop to assist labour (reduce pain, regulate contractions, ripen the cervix, calm the mind) went well a couple of weekends ago and I'll be holding it again in late Feb next year, dates to be determined so stay tuned for that.

Approximate read time of 5 minutes.

All the best to you and your family for a happy Christmas and relaxing New Year.

MORNING SICKNESS DOESN'T HAVE TO
WEIGH YOU DOWN
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Christine* came to me in a desperate state as she had been bed ridden due to her morning sickness since early on in her pregnancy.
She described feelings of a big cotton ball at the base of her throat that kept threatening to rise. She wasn't only sick in the morning, it had increasingly become an all day event and she wasn't happy about it. I palpated her upper abdomen and found there was a very tight band between her belly button and sternum. We cleared that tension using gentle acupuncture (one needle in fact for that part of the treatment!) She couldn't believe the difference as previously, the slightest pressure to that region made her want to vomit. I then did some warming therapy (moxibustion) on the triple energizer channel as it helps to ease nausea in pregnant women and to re-build their energy levels.
I evaluated her diet form a Chinese medicine perspective and found that she was eating the kinds of foods that would make that "cotton wool ball" feeling worse, such as bananas, fruit, salads, avocados and diary. In Chinese medicine these foods are seen as "damp" and "cold" which energieticaly and physically can form thick fluids, synonomous with that cotton wool ball feeling. It is also very important to keep the womb "warm" and this means not having too much raw food at it is more difficult to digest, can contribute to nausea and can give rise to a "cold womb". Where possible, most food should be lightly cooked to nourish pregnant mum and baby as much as possible.
Christine also told me she had wanted to fall pregnant but not so soon and it had really put her into a spin. She was struggling with her feelings and so we chatted about this and I offered her some reading material that really helped her see how she was feeling in a new light which helped to clear those emotional blocks. She is now into week 13 of her pregnancy and hardly suffering from nausea at all. It has gone from a 10/10 to a 2/10, not bad indeed!
COUPLE COUNSELLING & FERTILITY
is it your missing ingredient?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

couple in pregnancyOnce upon a time, counseling was considered only for those who really REALLY needed it. These days, it is much more acceptable and even a good idea to consider doing once a year even if "everything is ok". You may like to see it as a massage for your mind! It gets you thinking in different ways and really hearing what your partner has to say as well as giving you a chance to bring up what needs to be said and encourages you to be clear about the way you feel when sometimes there is confusion.

Starting a family is a big deal and it tends to bring up many issues such as whether you're ready, how you feel about being a parent, frustrations about not being able to fall pregnant or the intensity of a brand new life with a baby and no time for each other, let alone yourself. No matter where you are on the path of fertility, there always seems to be issues worth discussing and shedding some light on.

Although acupuncture and Chinese herbs work on the emotional and spiritual levels as well as the physical, they affect the individual who is coming for treatment. Treatment seeks to break patterns that have been forming within the individual for a long time. Chinese medicine doesn't however, deal with the dynamic between partners which is so important for effective pre-conception care, a supported pregnancy and a smooth transition to becoming a mum and dad.

I have seen the difference in clients who have gone through counseling at the same time as receiving acupuncture and herbs. They have told me they have a lot more clarity about their relationship, blocks have been shifted, they feel more supported by one another and have a renewed sense of love. They felt it gave them a chance to discuss issues that had been swept under the carpet for years sometimes and really breathed some fresh air into the relationship, allowing it to be much more fun, fresh and fruitful.

If you are interested in looking into this further, I would suggest visiting the Relationships Australia website. They are a Government funded organization and they charge you based on your income so no-one is excluded and they have centres all over Sydney.

SHONISHIN
Gentle effective Oriental medical treatment
for your children.

I'm offering FREE treatment for your kids in Jan and Feb, see below for details.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rebecca giving ShonishinIt is said that Shonishin was brought by the fairies to Japan a couple of hundred years ago. This may be because it is such a gentle yet effective technique that children love receiving. No needles are used, instead, small metallic tools are used to gently rub, scrape and tap the skin. This is all that is needed to stimulate their growing energy channels which in turn has incredible effects on their organ systems.
Shonishin can treat a number of conditions from the very early stages of life to around 10 years of age. These include: fever, bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic diarrhea, colic, constipation, teething, insomnia, neurotic hyperactivity, chronic urinary tract infections, bed wetting, habitual nosebleeds, hives, urticaria, chronic ear problems, chronic sinusitis, shinitis and eczema. And isn't it nice to know they can be treated effectively with such minimal interference?
Children are different to adults in that their meridian (energy) system is developing and growing just as much as their physical organs are and so a completely different form of treatment is required, this being Shonishin. A treatment involves the child sitting on the parents lap (unless they are older and are happy to lie on the treatment table) whilst their whole body is worked over with the gentle techniques - the neck and back, the arms and legs, the chest and abdomen. The general whole body treatment is always given first as it stimulates the child's system to effectively repair itself. Next, specific acupuncture point areas are used to address specific symptoms such as cough for example.
The treatment can take any where from five minutes to fifteen minutes depending on the size of the child and how hyperactive they are. For an acute illness, the child will need 2-3 treatments in the one week as they respond quickly to energetic treatment. If the illness is chronic, which tends to be the majority of cases, the child will need treatment 1-2 times per week for 2-3 months. Although they may seem recovered from the outside after only a few sessions, it is important to continue the healing process on the inside as this takes time and will mean the child's ability to stay healthy is greatly improved. After this time, once a month for maintenance is recommended and if all is well, this can be taught to the parents to do at home.
My Shonishin teacher has been practicing Chinese Medicine for 10 years and treating children with Shonishin for the last five years. She runs a paediatric clinic in Bali and her name is Dr Soma Glick. This is what she had to say about treating children: "The first thing that amazed me when I started treating children was how simple it is. One of my first patients was a three week-old baby who came down with a cough after a long flight across the globe. The baby's parents had first tried homeopathy without results, and were about to take their baby girl to a medical doctor when they heard about me. I gave the little girl a Shoni-shin session emphasizing the lung channel and booked another two appointments for the same week. It only took five minutes to perform the treatment on such a tiny baby. When the parents came back for the next session, the cough was completely gone. We did two more follow-ups and I assume there was no recurrence of the cough, since the parents did not come back to see me and referred many other parents with sick babies to me.
"Through treating little ones, I became aware that most of the patterns we carry into our adult lives actually start at a very early age. Psychologists already have written volumes on the impact of emotional traumas in childhood, especially sexual abuse and violence. What they have not emphasized is that simply living in an atmosphere of constant stress, tension or conflicts can create traumatic experiences. These experiences affect the child emotionally, and each emotional pattern will in time affect the child physically. I've seen children as young as one year old suffer from major emotional imbalances.
"These imbalances turn into the defense mechanisms we all develop in order to get what we want (or simply to cope with life). In terms of health, these defence mechanisms often lock us into reactionary patterns such as "me against the world", which do not serve our well-being. These reinforce our sense of separation from the universe and tend to create tension, contraction and struggles.
"The attitude we adopt toward pain and illness is often a major contributor to the progression of an illness. When we feel at peace and at home within and without, we can relax and drop our guards. The qi [energy] then naturally flows smoothly and easily. By age three, a child's constitutional tendencies and personality are already in place, along with the type of physical ailments they will be prone to. Strengthening the child's own healing abilities in these weaker areas can make an invaluable contribution to their future health."
So as you can see, this Shonishin technique really is something else. It's wonderful for children who have been through a divorce or separation of parents, children who have had many falls or been in car accidents, have had tummy upsets regularly or don't have a good appetite, are hyperactive, have autism, had many ear infections as a toddler, had many vaccinations, etc. I am so passionate about it and would really love the opportunity for you, my clients, and your children or even your friends children, to experience its benefits.
A few months ago I completed Shonishin training and haven't had the opportunity to treat many children so far. So throughout the months of January and February 2008, I am offering your children FREE treatments.
Why am I doing this? Because I love working with children number one, the results you can achieve with them are so quick number two, they will feel good and their health will be improved number three, as a by-product they will be easier for you to take care of, number four and I would greatly appreciate the experience, number five.  So there you have it - five fabulous reasons to say YES to treatment for your children in 2008.
The children who I have treated really enjoy their treatments and it makes them feel special they tell me if they are old enough to talk! If they're not old enough, they are completely fascinated with what you are doing, staring at the areas of their body you are treating.
You will need to book your child in for half hour slots initially and then potentially 20 minute slots. From March onwards I will be charging so get in quick! Normally a 15 minute session is $30 and a half hour session is $40. If I haven't seen your child before, it's best that we discuss their case over the phone or when you come to see me as this allows me to engage with them directly in the session and have maximum time for treatment.
You can book in by calling me on 0404 457 911 or emailing me at info@rebeccamaryoung.com.au
Price changes for 2008 and updated cancellation policy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

From the beginning of January 2008, my price for one hour treatments in North Sydney will increase from $70 to $75.

The prices at my Alexandria clinic will not change and remain at $70 per hour.

My clinic has become busier and busier this year and often I have people on waiting lists for appointments. However, in the last couple of months especially, I have had an increasing number of very late cancellations or changes in appointment times, which has meant I have not had sufficient time to allow the person on the waiting list to take the spot and I end up having an empty hour. So in light of this, I have developed a cancellation policy to be fair to all concerned.

 "Please give the clinic 24 hours notice should you wish to cancel or change your appointment.

If you are unable to give 24 hrs notice, 50% of the fee will be charged. If less than an hour notice is given, 100% of the fee will be charged.

If the clinic is able to fill your place with someone on the waiting list, no fee will be charged.

I thank you for your cooperation in this matter."

I want you to know that I find this very difficult to deal with and have avoided it for quite sometime. However, as a client of many other professionals myself, I see that they have cancellation policies and I fully respect that and so have decided it's time for myself to also have one that I follow through on to ensure my clinic runs smoothly and effectively.

I am passionate about health and helping you to be the best you can be so please, just give me 24 hours notice if you have to change times and we won't need to deal with my cancellation policy!! Of course there are legitimate situations such as parents or children going to hospital, going into labour etc, but I'm talking about the other stuff - you know what I mean.
