Responsiveness to Intervention: Questions PARENTS Must Ask

IDEA 04 offers states and localities the option of using "a process that determines if the child responds to scientific, research-based intervention as part of the evaluation process ..., " but it does not require that states or districts use Responsiveness-to-Intervention, often shortened to RTI. Although RTI is similar to the old pre-referral or problem-solving model first suggested by Dr. James Chalfant in the mid-70's as Teacher Assistance Teams (TAT), parents have begun to hear a lot about RTI as a "new" way to help students with learning disabilities.

For more information on Responsiveness-to-Intervention, parents are encouraged to review and share the following materials available on the LDA website,  www.LDAamerica.org.

Dental Care for Children with Disabilities

From MyChildWithouLimits.org

Proper oral hygiene, the daily care of your teeth and gums and frequent monitoring by a dentist, is a vital part of every child's overall health and well-being, but is especially essential for many children with developmental disabilities, who are at greater risk for serious health problems resulting from poor oral hygiene. Resources for Homeschoolers

An estimated 1.5 million students are homeschooled in the United States according to the National Household Education Surveys Program. The number of children hosmeschooled has increased since 1999, and there are a number of reasons that influence this decision. For 4 percent of these parents (or guardians) who choose this method, it is because a child has special needs.

It is a challenge to get resources. Parents have shared with us that it is very difficult to get accessile books and reading tools for children with disabilities. This can be true for homeschoolers who do not have everyday access to special education teachers and public school resources. Furthermore, processes for special needs testing and for getting accommoations vary from state to state.

Bookshare can help. Bookshare's online library is available worldwide and can be accessed 24 hours a day. Its collection has over 68,000 digital books and tools that make reading possible for students who previously found it difficult or impossible to read print. Bookshar's books are downloaded to computers and acccessed with software or devices that allow students to listen to books, hear and see wordds at the same time(multi-modal) and use advanced study tools.

Legislation
National Center for Learning Disabilities Legislative Update

by Laura Kaloi

The Keeping All Students Safe Act (H.R. 4247) passed the House by a vote of 262 to 153. H.R. 4247 is now the first bill to address the use of abusive and deadly seclusion and restraint in our nation's public schools. The passage of this bill will help to ensure the safety of both students and school staff, and will create a minimum level of protection for school children (public or private), that all states must meet or exceed.

Specifically, it will prohibit the restraint or locked-seclusion of students unless there is an imminent risk of physical injury that less restrictive interventions would not stop. Research has shown that there are numerous alternatives to restraint and seclusion, including positive behavioral interventions and supports and other techniques. After months of hard work by parents and advocates, and the support of people like you, this important legislation has cleared the House and will now need to be acted upon by the Senate.
