NEWS YOU CAN USE
Challenged Athletes Foundation
The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has voted unanimously to approve the concept of allowing  athletes who use wheelchairs to become official members of high school track teams. A subcommittee has been formed to investigate options and report back to the board at the November meeting. This represents a unique opportunity to help make something great happen for high school students with disabilities.

The Challenged Athletes Foundation-Florida  (CAF-Florida) has been working on a program to promote school-based adaptive sports here in Florida.  CAF-Florida is collecting information about athletes who use wheelchairs who want to become members of high school track teams, and will present their findings to the FHSAA at the November meeting.

Anyone interested in this project should send their names to Kelly Mione at
kelly.mione@hometowntrinity.com, who is working with CAF-Florida  to gather this data. If you have questions please call Mr. Mione at 727-942-2591 x222.

Campaign to Tackle Unemployment Among People with Disabilities
By Michelle Diament
September 18, 2009

A national campaign to promote employment of people with disabilities will ask employers to look at this population in a new light.
The Campaign for Disability Employment, a new effort of the American Association of People with Disabilities, Special Olympics and a handful of other groups, is launching an initiative dubbed "What Can You Do?" It features a public service announcement and a new website where users can learn about employment issues and share their experiences.

The Web site also includes the winning videos from a contest put on by The Campaign for Disability Employment this summer. Videos show positive images of people with disabilities at work.

Jobs are particularly hard to come by right now for people with disabilities, employment statistics indicate. In August, this population experienced a 16.9 percent rate of unemployment, which is the highest rate on record since the U.S. Department of Labor began tracking such statistics in October 2008.

Meanwhile, the rest of the population was unemployed at a rate of just 9.3 percent. These numbers are not seasonally adjusted.

"The campaign is about raising expectations and changing perceptions of people with disabilities," said Kathleen Martinez, assistant secretary for the Office of Disability Employment Policy at the U.S. Department of Labor. "The employment outlook for people with disabilities will only improve when we have the opportunity to show the contribution we can make."
CEC Adopts Policy on Physical Restraint and Seclusion

RESOURCES
CDC Parent Portal
There is a new resource available for parents from the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC has created a Parent Portal (www.cdc.gov/parents) to help parents find information to give children healthier, safer lives. The CDC Parent Portal organizes and presents information for parents and provides resources from across CDC, all in one location, making it easier for parents to find what they are looking for. The Portal is a great source for credible, accurate information in helping parents raising healthy kids and providing a safe home and community. It also is a resource for diseases and conditions that can occur, and for developmental milestones and schedules. The Parent Portal also provides information on physical activity, diet, physical and mental health, injuries and violence, peer relationships, and a special section on risk behaviors geared for the parents of teens.
