Tai Chi Treats Lung Disease COPD - Says Australia Lung Foundation

Evidence-Based Tai Chi Treatment
Australian Aging Agenda, 8/16/2012

A new study from the University of Sydney, hailed as one of the most comprehensive and conclusive studies of its kind, suggests that Sun-style of Tai Chi is not only a valid but an incredibly effective form of exercise therapy for people with COPD, which improves a person's capacity to improve exercise capacity and quality of life.

Recently published in the European Respiratory Journal, the research has also found that the more gentle brand of Tai Chi may be as beneficial as the traditional exercise of standard pulmonary rehabilitation. . . .

According to Australian Lung Foundation figures, the treatment could help an overwhelming percentage of people with COPD, as only about one per cent of the population with the disease currently have access to pulmonary rehabilitation.

Tai Chi & Qigong - Part of a Revolution in Medicine

Alternative medicine attracts a following, but does it work?
The Courier Journal, 8/26/2012

Massage, biofeedback, tai chi, hypnosis, herbal supplements, reiki - call it alternative, complementary or the latest moniker - integrative - medicine, it is growing in popularity. More and more conventional practitioners are even offering some integrative techniques. . . . "

"There are things in the world of healing that medicine is still trying to figure out -- things you just see when you actually open your eyes to this world of integrative medicine that you can't put your fingers on," says Dr. Nick Ulmer, family physician and vice president of clinical services at Spartanburg (S.C.) Regional Healthcare System.

"But you can see people do get better." . . .

Though not yet covered by insurance, alternative therapies can be as helpful as conventional treatments, Ulmer says.

BREAKING NEWS!

Harvard Health Publications Reports "Tai Chi Improves BALANCE.

 Venezuela
World Tai Chi & Qigong Day event, Venezuela, WTCQD 2012

Try tai chi to improve balance, avoid falls

Posted August 23, 2012, 9:00 am
Stephanie Watson, Executive Editor, Harvard Women's Health Watch

Compared to the pumping intensity of spin or Zumba, a tai chi class looks like it's being performed in slow motion. Watching the gentle, graceful movements of this ancient Chinese practice, it's hard to imagine that tai chi can burn off a single calorie or strengthen muscles. But this exercise program is far more dynamic than it looks.

"The slowness that you see from the outside can be deceptive," says Dr. Peter Wayne, research director of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
