Chocolate Consumption Is Associated with Lower
Cardiac Mortality after Acute Myocardial Infarction
The health benefits of chocolate have been of
increased interest in recent years because it is a rich
source of flavonoid antioxidants. The results of several
short-term clinical trials have shown beneficial effects
of cocoa (Theobroma cacao) on the cardiovascular
system, including improved endothelial function,
inhibition of platelet activation and low-density-
lipoprotein oxidation, and decreased blood pressure.
Limited evidence supports the possible long-term
cardioprotective effects of chocolate. Population-
based studies have shown that chocolate or cocoa
consumption is associated with lower cardiovascular
mortality in postmenopausal women and in elderly
men with no cardiovascular disease. However, the
long-term effects of chocolate consumption in patients
with established coronary heart disease is largely
unknown. Thus, the present study was conducted to
investigate the long-term effects of chocolate
consumption on all-cause mortality, cardiac mortality,
and non-fatal outcomes-including recurrent acute
myocardial infarction (AMI) and hospitalization for heart
failure and stroke-in patients who survived a first AMI.

Anti-inflammatory Effects of Cocoa Consumption May
Help Prevent Atherosclerosis
Studies have indicated that dietary flavonoids may
help prevent coronary heart disease (CHD). Cocoa
and its products are a rich source of dietary flavonoids.
The health benefits of cocoa are related to the capacity
to improve lipid profiles and insulin sensitivity, lower
blood pressure, reduce platelet activity and function,
and diminish endothelial dysfunction.1-3 Recent
evidence has linked inflammation with the initiation
and progression of atherosclerosis. According to the
authors, few human trials have studied the anti-
inflammatory effects of cocoa, and those studies have
reported contradictory results―either neutral
effects or
single inflammatory biomarker changes, including
endothelial-derived adhesion molecules,
proinflammatory cytokines, and high-sensitivity C-
reactive protein (hs-CRP). The authors conducted a
randomized, crossover, controlled clinical trial to
assess chronic cocoa consumption in subjects at
high-risk for CHD on the expression of soluble
adhesion molecules and proinflammatory cytokines
associated with early atherosclerosis stages.

Consumption of Flavanol-Containing Cocoa Reverses
Vascular Dysfunction in Diabetic Patients
The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is
increasing worldwide and is accompanied by an
increasing risk of cardiovascular disease and
mortality. Prescription medications are often used
extensively in an attempt to prevent and/or treat
complications of type 2 diabetes; however, they are
often inadequate. Observational studies have shown
that lifestyle modification (e.g., increased physical
activity, weight loss, and dietary changes) can prevent
diabetes and its associated complications.
Epidemiologic studies have recently shown an inverse
correlation between flavanol consumption and
mortality from cardiovascular disease and the
incidence of diabetes. Flavanols are predominantly
found in fruit, vegetables, tea (Camellia sinensis), red
wine (Vitis vinifera), and especially cocoa (Theobroma
cacao). The results of dietary intervention trials have
shown beneficial effects of flavanols on low-density-
lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation, platelet aggregation,
insulin sensitivity, endothelial function, and blood
pressure. The objective of the present study was to
investigate the feasibility and efficacy of a dietary
intervention with flavanols from cocoa on improving
vascular function in diabetic patients.

Chinese Herb Garden Promotes Sustainable Use
of Medicinal Asian Plants
As the global market for Chinese herbal medicine
continues to rapidly expand, some Asian medicinal
plants are increasingly faced with over-harvest, habitat
loss, effects of climate change, and other
sustainability challenges-perhaps moreso than
many herbal practitioners and consumers are aware.
A newly-established nonprofit, called Chinese Herb
Garden (CHG), intends to disseminate information
about such plants' conservation needs and promote
the sustainable use of Asian medicinal flora.

Evidence-based Efficacy of 'Adaptogens' in Fatigue
and Proposed Molecular Mechanisms of Activity
Fatigue can be sufficiently intense that it interferes with
a normal life. Temporary fatigue is a minor illness that
goes away relatively rapidly. Chronic fatigue, lasting 6
months or more, is not easily cured with rest and
sleep. Many people consume 'adaptogenic' herbs to
treat stress-related fatigue. The most current definition
of an adaptogen is an herbal preparation that can
increase resistance to stress. Adaptogens that have
been evaluated in well-conducted clinical trials and
give evidence of efficacy are: rhodiola (Rhodiola
rosea); schisandra (Schisandra chinensis); eleuthero
(a.k.a. 'Siberian ginseng'; Eleutherococcus
senticosus); Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng); and
ADAPT-232® (Swedish Herbal Institute; Goteborg,
Sweden) a fixed combination of eleuthero, schisandra,
and rhodiola root extract. (However, see the reference
following this summary, a review of eleuthero's effects
relative to its claimed 'adaptogenic' potential).1
Adaptogenenformule (Rhodiola-, Eleuterococcus- en
Ginsengextract ana 50mg) 11,61 euro/100

Het januari-thema van apotheek.nl is medicijnen &

een gewone apotheek op de hoek, een legale
internetapotheek en een illegale medicijnwinkel op
internet. Deze actie sluit aan op de lopende
voorlichtingscampagne van het ministerie van VWS
over medicijnen kopen via internet. Er is een speciale
