One Step At a Time

A proverb says that "step by step one goes very far."  Although this is always the case, this saying seems particularly applicable right now, given some of our upcoming events.

Just this past weekend, we celebrated our 49th home dedication with our new homeowners - Sherry and Chuck, the Faith Builder congregations, and the North Hills community. Together, we watched Sherry and Chuck take their first steps into their new home.  Just as with a baby's first steps, these steps were a momentous and joyful occasion, opening a whole new world of possibilities.

First steps can also be a scary thing sometimes, particularly for those who have never stood alone, or who are getting back on their feet.  Our Women Build committee recognizes the importance of lending a hand to those in need.  Acknowledging that seventy seven percent of our homeowners are single mothers with children under the age of 18 when they move into their Habitat homes, they work together to fundraise and build a home for fellow women in need.

I invite you to join us for a Women Build Benefit Walk at the end of July, as we join with family, friends and dogs and walk together in pursuit of a common goal - building more homes for families in need.  Together, we can make great strides to eliminate poverty and substandard housing in our own community.

Later this year, Habitat staffer Linley Kirkwood, our Community Outreach Coordinator, is also taking steps to help Habitat.  She is running a half marathon in November and asks for your support.  All contributions will also benefit the Women Build project.

Listening to Linley discuss her training, I have come to realize that many qualities of a "good" runner apply to running a nonprofit as well.  Determination.  Hard work. Preparation.  Persistence.  Patience. Setting reasonable goals and priorities. All of these things are critical in helping Habitat do what we do each and every day.

Step by step, Habitat builds homes, lives and communities.  Step by step, we will go very far.

Sincerely,
