A Reinvigorating Week!

Each year, a group of college volunteers from another area in the country comes to volunteer and build homes with us during a "Collegiate Challenge" week.  Students spend their time working in partnership with our affiliate, the local community and partner families to help eliminate substandard housing in Montgomery County.

Although this is the fourteenth year that HFHMC has hosted Collegiate Challenge groups, we anticipate this week with great excitement each and every year.  Not only does this week provide an excellent educational opportunity for students to understand our local housing situation and participate in our efforts, but the students' energy and enthusiasm is infectious and they bring a fresh burst of energy to our work sites, our office, and our entire organization.

This year we are hosting a group from the University of Maine at Augusta for the second year in a row. A few of this year's group are repeat volunteers so they are able to see the progress at 822 Cherry Street and 830 Cherry Street - two of our rehab projects in Norristown - since they worked on them one year ago.  Although the students may be on vacation from classes, we still put them to work!  It is amazing how much can be accomplished in just one week by the students' focused efforts, especially since they are often trained just once in the beginning before being given significant projects for the week.

After working with us over their spring break, students are often affected by what we like to call "Habititus," a desire to share their excitement for Habitat's work with anyone and everyone they encounter.  The voices of youth are very effective in communicating the need for more safe, decent, affordable housing and sharing about the work they have done with Habitat.  For many of the students, Collegiate Challenge is their first interaction with Habitat and their first step in forming a lifelong relationship with Habitat for Humanity and the issues surrounding affordable housing.

Collegiate Challenge is a great reflection of how our Habitat community comes together and rallies around our volunteers, who are the heart and soul of our organization.  This year, the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr, PA offered their hospitality and is housing the group for the week.  Also, Christ United Methodist Church in Lansdale, Beth Or, St. John's of Ambler and Villanova University nourished our volunteers and construction crew with delicious lunches this week.  Collegiate Challenge would not be possible without the help of all of the individuals and congregations that are involved!

Sincerely,

Devon Builders Competition

Benefiting Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the Delaware Valley region, the 4th Annual Builders' Competition was held at the Philadelphia Convention
Center in Oaks, PA. The two-day competition drew teams of building professionals from across the region, in a contest to see which team could frame out a standard Habitat for Humanity two or three bedroom home in the least amount of time.  It was amazing to watch as some of the top teams were able to complete the task in less than an hour and a half.  Nine teams built nine homes, which will be constructed by the Habitat affiliates in New Castle County, Camden, and Delaware County.  HFHMC received all of the extra lumber which will be used in our own home construction. Thanks to the Builders Competition organizers, sponsors and participants!
April 1 is National Census Day!

Stand up and be counted with the 2010 Census.  Please fill out your census in order to help build a better future for everyone!  The census is only ten easy questions, and it's mandatory for everyone to fill one out.  It is important for you, as well as our local community, for many reasons:
  • It determines how many seats Pennsylvania occupies in the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • It determines how more than $400 billion dollars of federal funding is allocated on infrastructure and services like hospitals, job training centers, schools, senior centers, emergency services, public-work projects.
  • It makes a statement about what resources our community needs.
Board Member Spotlight

This month, we would like to spotlight another one of our new board members that joined our organization in January.

Sandy Bigelow, a consultant for Vanguard Global Associations, is a research and development professional with more than 20 years of experience in leading global technology responsibilities in the food and nutrition industries.  He has worked for both large companies and small or early-stage companies.  He joins our board after having served on the Resource Development Committee for one year.

Sandy's ability to envision, design and implement strategies to meet a variety of challenges will help Habitat transition to a new level.  We are very excited to have him on board.  Welcome Sandy!

Calling all 5th graders!
 Saturday, April 17, 2010

The 9th annual Build A House...Build A Dream! Contest for Kids is an event hosted by Delaware Valley Habitat for Humanity each year. The contest raises both awareness of the need for affordable housing and funds for local Habitat homebuilding programs. Fifth grade students from schools across the Delaware Valley work individually or in teams to build their own three dimensional, model "dream homes." The imaginative, colorful designs reflect the wide ranging interests and issues that are of concern to the participants. Click here for more information or to register.

You don't have to build a house to participate!  Stop by Drexel University on April 17 to see the amazing results of all the students' hard work.

Please contact Linley at linley@habitatmontco.org for more information.
