Director's Message
| With the end of a very warm spring here in Chico, the CED is prepared to take on the heat and enjoy watching those May flowers grow. CED has been actively involved with many conferences offering community and business related opportunities in hopes to rebuild our local economy.
One of our student interns, who we are fortunate enough to call a part of our team, has grown with us over the past two years, and her experiences have not only helped the CED but have complimented her education in economics. Marcy McCormick has helped collect data for the 2010 Economic and Demographic Profile Series as well as participated in two national conferences. Her knowledge of instructing SBDC counselors on utilizing data provided through BIAP has improved our business here at the CED. We are sad to say goodbye to our head Research Assistant but instead we will say "Good luck and congratulations on graduating CSU, Chico!"
CED and its partners the Business Entrepreneurship Center and NEC SBDC at Shasta College were successful with a sold-out tech conference in Redding, held on February 9th. Due to the positive outcome and energetic feedback, we will continue the Growing your Business Technology Made Simple Program throughout surrounding areas such as Chico and Anderson. Attendees will be given the chance of a lifetime to interact and learn with experts in areas of email marketing, web site creation, social networking for business, and much more.
We are proud to say that the Chick-Fil-A Leadercast conference is another sold-out event which is being held on May 4th at the Chico, CA Masonic Lodge. The NEC SBDC at Yuba City has seats available and is taking registration now for the same Simulcast in Live Oak. Phenomenal speakers such as the talented sports athlete Tim Tebow and well-known anchor Soledad O'Brien will be presenting at the professional development Simulcast, broadcast live from Atlanta. The Leadercast conference is full of nationally recognized inspirational leaders and professionals getting the opportunity to get their teams together to be inspired from 2012 and beyond.

A Student Researcher's Perspective
|

A Student Researcher's Perspective Hello, I'm Marcy McCormick and I'm in my final semester as an undergraduate at Chico State and just finishing up my second year as a Research Assistant here at the Center for Economic Development. As an economics major, my position at the CED is the perfect complement to my education.
I was hired in March of 2010 to help collect data for the 2010 Economic and Demographic Profile Series, where I became quite adept in using Microsoft Excel and Adobe InDesign. My interest in entrepreneurship and assisting small businesses landed me as the head Research Assistant for CED's Business and Industry Assistance Program. As part of BIAP, I've had the opportunity to attend two national conferences and even instruct Small Business Development Center counselors on how to utilize data provided through BIAP.
Overall, the skills I've gained working at the CED go above and beyond what I expected from an undergraduate internship. I am very grateful to have spent my last two years at Chico State as part of the close-knit and encouraging team at the CED.
