Director's Message
As March draws to a close we are keeping busy here at the Center for Economic Development.

In other activities, research assistants Collin Blower and Danny Greenwood discuss their experiences working on county profiles. The purpose of the profiles is to make economic and demographic information available to the general public in a consolidated and comprehensive package so decisions can be made using the most timely and reliable data. The publication has been used for grant writing, business planning, marketing, and community planning efforts. Originally published in 1990 as a one-page county economic and demographic summary, the profiles have grown in length to an average of 175 pages per county. Visit our Web site to learn more: About the Profiles.

An interesting article on the ongoing broadband mapping efforts in support of the Public Utilities Commission statewide broadband mapping and data development continue to reveal interesting information for public use. For example, the recent "mobile broadband" maps from the California Public Utilities Commission's Web site are currently available.

Michael Suplita discusses the Business and Industry Assistance Program (BIAP) and the various contracts that the CED currently has such as the USDA Rural Development, SBA, and the City of Chico to provide intensive market research assistance to businesses in their respective communities. Michael seeks feedback from the small business community and local community leaders on the type of data that they would like to see made available. Contact: msuplita@csuchico.edu

In an effort to show you the "face of CED," we are highlighting one of our Student Researchers this month. This month Kayla Combs writes about her work as our graphic designer on various projects.

We are pleased to announce the Chick-fil-A Leadercast LIVE broadcast from Atlanta at the Chico Masonic Center on May 4th. This is a one-day leadership event featuring several renowned leaders speaking on leadership issues that you face every day. To register, visit www.cedcal.com/events.

Profile Series
I first came into to CED as a freshman in college, and the first project I was assigned was one of the county profiles. Having no experience with economics or data analysis you can see how one might be intimidated by all the numbers, graphs, percents, and charts. As I dove deeper into the realm of data analysis and profiles I started to understand what all of it was about. It was more than just a bunch of statistics and graphs; it was a whole world of information needed to keep companies, counties, and organizations running. The information we provide in the profiles is used to compare years and years of information and data to make a decision that will ultimately affect the futures of counties and towns. Here at CED profile sub sections include information regarding SAT scores to information entailing agricultural production and earnings. This vast range of information and compiled data can affect the way policies are made or handled.

The data compiled at CED for the annual profiles series provides a snap shot of county performance throughout multiple years. The profiles not only show economic and demographic data but also environmental and social indicators as well. When this data is compared to other counties or the state certain needs and or successes within the county can be recognized clearly. As a student researcher I find this type of data comparison helpful in many ways and it has kept me well informed on the status of the north state's economic health. To provide this type of data to the public in an understandable manner and to find it all in one report is invaluable and a necessity for every county.

A Student Researcher's Perspective
A Student Researcher's Perspective will be part of an ongoing series that spotlights the work and viewpoints of our student research assistants.

Hello, my name is Kayla Combs and in May, I will be graduating with a bachelor's degree in mass communication design from California State University, Chico with an emphasis in broadcasting/film, and instructional design. I have learned and acquired many skills during my academic career. After applying myself to achieve this goal, I feel very accomplished to say that I have joined a hard-working, welcoming team at the Center for Economic Development this past December. Throughout my work experience here, I have significantly contributed to the design and the development of high-quality technological projects.

My work history at the Center for Economic Development ranges from an IT assistant to the 2012 Economic Forecast Conference to the contribution of marketing materials for the Redding Tech Conference that was held on February 9th. Because of my experience at CED, I have adapted to social settings, media outlets, and professional networking. My job experience has also expanded critically on my leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills allowing me to feel comfortable in any setting. Our upcoming Tech Conferences to be held in Anderson and Chico will demonstrate the amazing work we perform. The dates for these conferences will be coming soon through a newsletter blast. Don't miss out on a wonderful experience that CED has to offer!

Ongoing Broadband Mapping for California's Changing Communities

CED's broadband mapping efforts in support of the Public Utilities Commission statewide broadband mapping and data development efforts continue to reveal interesting information for public use. This week, please note the availability of "mobile broadband" maps. Not every population in California has the same first choice when it comes to accessing the Internet, and there is a growing understanding that "mobile broadband" accessed on a smartphone may be just as critical as traditional broadband for some groups.

A statewide mobile broadband availability map is available at the California Public Utilities Commission's website. A traditional broadband availability map for the state is also available, and more detailed maps showing top speeds for various broadband technologies can be found at the CPUC's broadband mapping directory.

As technology and consumer choices continue to change, there is no dispute that the smartphone is becoming increasingly integral to the daily communication of many Californians. A recent report by the National Hispanic Media Coalition explains that smartphone penetration and data usage is higher for Latino populations than any other ethnic group, even as home broadband adoption for Latinos remains lower than any other group. While efforts to increase home broadband adoption are no less important than ever, this report points to mobile broadband as another tool that can help us close California's digital divide.

Business Services Update

The Business and Industry Assistance Program (BIAP) at the CED has taken on a role of intensive one-on-one market research counseling for small businesses in Northern California. The BIAP actively partners with local economic developers, lenders, and small business counselors to stress the importance of market research for loan applications, business plans, marketing strategies and most importantly to allow small businesses to make informed decisions when allocating scarce resources. We all know that capital is difficult to come by in this economy so it is important that businesses have all the necessary information to make sound decisions about opening, expanding or investing.

As of today, BIAP is working under contracts with USDA Rural Development, SBA, and the City of Chico to provide intensive market research assistance to businesses in their respective communities. We are currently seeking feedback from the small business community and local community leaders on what types of data you would like to see made available. We here at the BIAP are curious as to what is important to you, whether it be quick turnaround time, intensive one-on-one consultations about data needs, prefer e-mail, or a quick phone call. Is it more important to you to have a standard set of reports or is a longer waiting period worth customized information? This is your chance to tell us what types of business data is relevant to you and how you would like it presented. Send your feedback to Michael Suplita at msuplita@csuchico.edu.

Currently we help companies using the following strategies: market/trade area mapping, customer targeting via economic and demographic reports, competitor data, business lists, customer counts and mailing list, industry trend research, search engine optimization, social media training, and web site analytics. In addition, to helping businesses with their market penetration the CED's services also allow businesses to make revenue predictions when evaluating new product lines, new markets, and new businesses. Sales estimates are an integral part of any business plan, especially when seeking funding. If you or any one you know is in need of these services please contact Michael Suplita at (530) 898-3855 or msuplita@csuchico.edu.
