Greetings!
As the year winds down to a close, we have been extremely busy getting everything ready for our 12th Annual Economic Forecast Conference. As you will see in the first article below, this year it's being held in Oroville and there will be a hot breakfast! Speaking of food, we'll be serving lunch as well because we're taking advantage of the facilities and having a set of breakout sessions in the afternoon. These breakout sessions are your opportunity to participate in a number of facilitated conversations on different topics impacting our collective ability to get our economy moving!  This will be THE must attend conference of the year - You Need To Be There!

Also in this newsletter, Warren Jensen has been busy putting together several maps of our state showing some of the results from the 2010 census.

And, the final article in this year-end edition of our newsletter is a call out to businesses who are poised for growth and could use assistance in the areas of competitive business intelligence, marketing research services, financial services, website services and social media utilization. We have a USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant that will subsidize our costs to support your businesses. Read the article, download the RFP, and send us your application.

And with that, we want to send you our best wishes for a joyous holiday season and a happy and prosperous new year!

Annual Economic Forecast Conference Expands and Moves to Oroville

More Bang for the Buck!

Who Says There is No Longer a Free Lunch?

CED presents an Improved 2012 Economic Forecast Conference

January 12, 2012

The Annual Economic Forecast Conference, traditionally held in the ballroom of Bell Memorial Union, has grown to the point where we have exceeded the capacity of the room! As a result, and based upon feedback from last year's conference, CED is moving the conference to Oroville to the Gold Country Event Center and we are lengthening the conference to include a set of breakout sessions in the afternoon along with a free lunch.

The theme of the this year's event is the "Roadmap for Growth," and a major part of that roadmap includes looking at the North State from a broader, more regional perspective - not just the Butte, Glenn and Tehama County perspective of the past eleven (11) years, but to look at the region as extending from Sacramento to Shasta...and beyond. We have invited elected officials from throughout this expanded region to participate, and we encourage audience participation in the breakout sessions.

This year's speakers include Gary Zimmerman from the Federal Reserve Bank in San Francisco to address the national economic outlook; Dr. Robert Eyler from Sonoma State to talk about what is happening at the state level; and Dr. David Gallo to assess how things are going throughout the various counties of the North State region.

In addition, Tom Murphy, former mayor of Pittsburgh, PA and now a senior fellow at the Urban Land Institute will address regional innovation that is built around anchor institutions.

The breakout sessions target three (3) major audience groups - Native American communities, (2) Businesses, and (3) Legislators, elected officials and public policy analysts.

Panelists from the Federal Reserve Bank of Seattle, the Economic Development Administration, Native American lending institutions, the Native American Chamber of Commerce of California, and the Native American Procurement Technical Assistance Center will participate in the Native American economic development breakout sessions.

Businesses can interact with panelists in breakout sessions addressing Agricultural and Culinary Tourism, Small Business Lending, Lessons Learned from Growing Your Own Business, Marketing Intelligence Tools that are now available to Small and Medium Sized Businesses, and a special breakout session on Small Business Regulatory Reform.

Legislators, Elected Officials, and Public Policy Analysts should be drawn to breakout sessions on Leveraging Partnerships to Do More with Less, Identifying the Building Blocks for Regional Development, Learning How to Leverage Infrastructure Assets across a Region, and the popular Small Business Regulatory Reform session.

CED's ability to expand the conference and offer a free breakfast and lunch at the same price as last year's conference ($65.00) has been made possible through the generous support and financial assistance of our sponsors including Rabobank, the City of Oroville, PG&E and Gold Country Event Center.

Each attendee will receive our 2012 Economic Scorecard which examines 23 indices and ranks 9 regions in 5 different categories ranging from economic activity to quality of place. The various counties of the North Valley will be the main focus of the document.

New Location!-This year's conference will be held at the Gold County Event Center in Oroville, CA. The Gold Country Event Center is a separate facility from the Gold County Casino and has its own outside entrance that is separate from the casino, and there is ample free parking.

CED continues its effort to incorporate Census 2010 and American Community Survey data into its GIS mapping database.  We now have demographic data down to the City Block level!  Please check out our latest maps on population density and senior population concentrations in California.

We also have a closeup of the Fresno Metropolitan Area to show how the block detail looks at the local level. We're using Fresno as an example so we can give a shout out to the Fresno State Office of Community and Economic Development for bringing Warren Jensen out for a Census Data workshop on November 3. You guys are the best!
