November 2010
The Newsletter
Greetings!

We continue to see mixed signs of economic growth.   The coming weeks will provide much needed data on job growth and increased spending tied to holiday shopping.

This month we are happy to have concluded the 2010 County Economic and Demographic Workshops, ending with the El Dorado County Workshop just this morning. Next month our annual Tri County Economic Forecast Conference will bring together regional leadership from across the Upstate to hear about job creation in 2011.

I hope you have a wonderful December - and Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Economic and Demographic  Workshops Come to an End

CED successfully concluded its 2010 County Economic and Demographic Workshops  today.

Dr. David Gallo, Resident Economist of the Center for Economic Development, Chico State University, and Dr. Robert Eyler Ph.D., Department Chair of Economics at California State University, Sonoma, presented and discussed economic and demographic information impacting 16 different counties in northern California including: current state, national and local conditions, housing market conditions, forecasts of economic recovery, long-term population and income growth, and local economic base industries.

The CED would like to thank Dr. Gallo and Dr. Eyler for their intriguing and insightful information they presented to the 16 northern California counties. This information, according to Dan Ripke, Director of CED, "improves the ability of local businesses and community leaders to successfully plan their future."

Our thanks also goes out to our Economic and Demographic workshop sponsors whose support is greatly appreciated.

Looking Towards 2011

by: Don Krysakowski, Assistant Director

Okay, the election is now over, the Giants have won the Series, and it's time to start thinking about 2011 - and the CED Annual Tri-County Economic Forecast Conference! Planning is already well underway for this annual event, held this year at the Bell Memorial Union (BMU) Ballroom on Thursday, January, 13th. The activity gets underway starting at 7:00 AM with a return of the hot breakfast - back by popular demand! This year's speakers will be covering a range of topics, all surrounding the theme of "Technology and Jobs".

Local speakers will include Christian Friedland of Build.com who will discuss "Technology to Expand Your Business Reach;" Jim Hauenstein of Enloe Hospital will address "Maximizing Front and Back Office Technologies; and Jim Sager from CSU, Chico will inform everyone about game changing "Technologies to Watch."

Our statewide speakers at this year's conference include Glenda Humiston, State Director of USDA Rural Development providing an update to her successful "Jobs and Rural Development" listening tour conducted last November; Craig Settles of Successful.com will be bringing us up to speed on "Community Broadband Development" activities around the nation; and in closing, Dr. Robert Eyler from Sonoma State will address the "North State Economic Outlook in 2011."

In addition to our closing question and answer session for all the speakers, this year we will be keeping the ballroom open for an additional hour for networking and conversation - so plan on joining us to hear from some great speakers and to catch up with old friends.
