| President's Message: Celebrating and Strengthening our Community

This fall, thanks to our many active members, ICFP has been living our values of Connection, by creating partnerships to ensure one another's success; and Community, by passionately contributing to the greater good.
We recently began The Community Coach Connection, CCC, a pro bono coaching program for non-profits, under the leadership of VP of Corporate Affairs Ginger Jarrett. Over twenty coaches are volunteering to provide six hours of coaching over six months to leaders of five non-profits from Philadelphia to Greensburg, PA. Thank you to our volunteer coaches who are increasing the visibility of the coaching profession and sharing the creative conversation of coaching with those who serve our communities.
On Oct 2, we will be delivering pro bono coaching at the PA Conference for Women. More than fifteen ICFP coaches will provide 20-minute "laser coaching" sessions to conference attendees for career and personal development.
These two volunteer opportunities are in direct alignment with our 2012 strategic initiative of promoting recognition of our ICF brand among the coaching community and in the greater Philadelphia area.
Within ICFP, the Buddy Coach program has launched under the direction of Past President Jeff Kaplan. This program provides mentoring and orientation to ICFP members over a six-month period, giving them the information and support they need to understand the benefits of membership, launch their coaching business, and answer all the countless questions new members often have. Contact Jeff for further details at drcoachjeff@aol.com .
Community Coffees have started up again in local neighborhoods. These informal gatherings provide connection, informal mentoring and information sharing, building relationships in an informal way. Check our newsletter for a coffee in your area. And for those many members who are interested in pursuing 60 hours of accredited coach training or certification, our Coaching Circles will provide the practice and mentoring you need. Contact Meredith Betz at gmeredith.betz@gmail.com .
I am proud of and grateful to our many active members who are living out the ICFP mission that "enriches lives, creates value, and expands possibilities for our members, clients, and communities while promoting standards of excellence in coaching."
If you are not yet a member of ICFP, this is a great time to join us! For information on membership please contact Rosy Elliot, VP, Membership, membership@philadelphiacoaches.org.
Warm regards,
Marjorie

October Dinner Meeting:
Authentic Leadership: An Inside Job
Speaker: Beryl B. Byles

Beryl B. Byles is an executive coach and business owner with over 40 years' experience specializing in leadership development for senior executives in large corporations, CEO's of small to mid-sized companies and leaders of non-profit enterprises. Strengths include the following:
- Facilitating individual change and growth toward greater effectiveness.
- Addressing productivity issues that depend on trusting relationships.
- Organizing and leading business strategy retreats.
- Encouraging creativity and courage in strategic, focused interventions.
Who's a leader or who's not? What does it take to step up and be an authentic, effective leader? Join us in October to hear lifelong leadership coach, Beryl B. Byles, who has compiled her findings and musings in her book, "Authentic Leadership: An Inside Job."
It seems that so many of us are being called upon to provide leadership coaching. We answer the call and do good work. Yet who's a leader or who's not and what does it take to step up as a leader remain hard questions to answer for many of us. In this evening's presentation we'll hear the anecdotal learning from a life-long leadership coach, Beryl B. Byles, who has complied her findings and musings in her book, "Authentic Leadership: An Inside Job."
As very social beings, we - both coaches & clients - are always around people. Therefore, we, as well as our clients, often have the opportunity to be leaders. The choice is very specifically that-a choice. The place where choices originate is on the inside. Thus, "leadership is a choice"- an inside job!
All of us are born with the ability to make choices. Therefore, we all have the ability to also make leadership choices. When those choices are the ones that are motivated by the gurgling in our souls, we influence others and invite them to make authentic choices for themselves. These others become the followers, if only for the instance since, by definition, leaders need followers.
But merely reading how-to books or about other leaders does not teach us to be leaders; that's because it's an inside job, not an outside directive. Authentic leadership invites our individuality into action; it does not invite us to play an external role.
So who is an authentic leader? And what is authentic leadership?
In this interactive evening Beryl will share her answer to these questions from her more than 40 years experience in the leadership trenches. She'll provide client examples as illustration. The components of Authentic Leadership will be outlined and the opportunity to consider how to incorporate each into current coaching with clients will be explored especially in terms of the power of choices.

Date and Time: Thursday, November , 2012, 6:00 - 9:00 pm SPEAKER: Harriet Stein
PROGRAM: In this program you will learn how to quickly and easily navigate back to yourself...your life... in this very moment. We all face the challenges of being connected, but just because we move through life encumbered by so many electronic devices; this does not mean we are "connecting."
During this program you will experience the practice of mindfulness meditation, and reflect upon the rationale for living in the moment. What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is the moment-by-moment awareness of your mood, your thoughts, and your body sensations. You will learn practical ways you can immediately reconnect with yourself, with colleagues, friends, and family. What a great way to begin the holiday season! |

Nominations due December 1 for Susan B. Race and NEW Volunteers of the Year Awards
This is your opportunity to recognize some of our very special colleagues for their work and dedication that has been shown during this past year for the benefit of ICFP. Recognizing all of our volunteers for all their work is an ongoing goal of the board. The Susan B. Race Volunteer of the Year Award is a special award intended to be given to an individual who has worked tirelessly for the betterment of ICF-Philadelphia.
In September 2009, during the 10th Anniversary celebration of PACA's beginning, a volunteer recognition award was presented. This was the first year that the award was named for a dedicated member of our organization who passed away in August, 2008. The Susan B. Race Volunteer of the Year Award is now presented annually to a member of ICF Philadelphia (formerly PACA) who has demonstrated outstanding volunteer qualities and has gone above and beyond any expectations for the advancement of ICFP.
New this year -- because so many people deserve to be recognized for their outstanding contributions to ICFP, the board has instituted new awards for you to consider nominating a worthy candidate or yourself:
- New Member of the Year - Is there a new face that stands out more than the rest? How about letting them know that you see them and appreciate how they have jumped right in
- Board Member of the Year - All board members contribute "over and above" to the success of ICFP. This award is designed to recognize a board member who has made an especially outstanding contribution to the ICFP over the past year.
- Mr./Ms. Congeniality - Who makes you feel totally comfortable and welcomed whenever you are involved with an ICF-P event or project? Who is always pleasant, approachable, and inclusive and who represents ICF-P in the most positive light?
Please consider submitting a nomination of one of your colleagues or yourself for any of the above awards. The nomination form can be found here. Please complete and return to Jill Magerman at Jillcoach4u@comcast.net before December 1, 2012. |

| By Dolores Davis, 2013 Conference Co-Chair
I am pleased to announce that Trish Perevich has joined me as Co-Chair for the 2013 conference. Trish has extensive experience as an events planner and brings much enthusiasm to this effort. We are searching for co-chairs to lead in the finance, site/logistics, marketing and program areas. Each of these areas is critical to our success and each offers a meaningful volunteer opportunity to have real impact in the Greater Philadelphia coaching community. Reinvigorate your Coaching Practice

Reinvigorate your Coaching Practice with Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) this December:
By Robert Schwarz, PsyD, Executive Director of ACEP
As the Executive Director of the
, an international non-profit based out of Ardmore, PA, I'm happy to announce that one of our well-loved, certification-track workshops is coming to Philadelphia this December:
Professional Skills 1. EFT is classified as an energy psychology (EP) modality - a highly focused, evidence-supported method of combining energy work with effective coaching that provides rapid relief from negative emotions and limiting beliefs that impede client performance and success.
This two-day workshop on December 1-2 is open to all coaches, therapists and helping professionals interested in developing a basic foundation in this technique. It is also the gateway to ACEP's EFT Certification Program. Designed and directed by Tina Craig, this is as close as you are going to get to the original teachings of EFT founder, Gary Craig.
As a coaching method, EFT helps clients remove blocks to performance that stem from emotional interferences from the past. As clients focus on specific distressing memories that support limiting beliefs, practitioners walk clients through a process of tapping on acupuncture meridian points. After a session, clients commonly report reductions in symptoms, new insights, cognitive and emotional shifts.
I have been incorporating EP techniques in my psychology and coaching practice since 1996 and have never looked back. By engaging the cognitive, somatic and energetic aspects of a client, these elegant tools allow for not only rapid relief of distress, but support clients in swiftly clearing away obstacles to reaching goals and improving performance. Two articles you might find interesting are ACEP's
