| President's Message

Welcome back to our regular dinner meetings! I am so glad to be back with all of you and I thank you for your kind wishes during my back injury.
We have an exciting fall scheduled for all of our members and guests. We love guests! This month we have the opportunity to hear from Janet Harvey, MCC and owner of Invite Change, a coaching and training company and the 2012 President of International Coach Federation Global.
You may have seen the July ICF member video message in which Cheryl Vermey, ICF Global board member and longtime ICF Philly member, and I talked about our vibrant Philadelphia chapter's progress and strategic vision. You can view the YouTube video here.
You have contributed to a considerable amount of community building at ICFP. Our community coffees have been well attended and are up and running again this fall. We are beginning another round of Coaches Circle to enable our newer coaches to receive mentoring from our more experienced coaches. We recently launched "Coach Buddies," pairing new guests and members with long term members.
Our efforts to help members who wish to be ICF Global certified continue this fall. In response to your questions about MER (ICF Global's Member Eligibility Requirements), I want to reiterate our local policy here at ICFP. We continue to welcome and encourage all those in our region who are interested in coaching: those who are coaching internally or externally regardless of whether you are trained by an ICF-approved school or training program, or have not yet begun formal training.
Your board is striving to continue bringing you a valuable membership experience. We hope you will renew your membership and keep learning, growing and networking with the ICFP "the welcoming place for coaches in the Philadelphia region."
Warm regards,
Marjorie

September Dinner Meeting
| |
Speaker: Janet M. Harvey, MCC, President & Director of Training, inviteCHANGE
Location:
Double Tree Guest Suites 640 W. Germantown Pike Plymouth Meeting, PA
Date & Time:
Thursday, Sept. 20th 2012 - 6:00-9:00 PM
6:00-6:30 pm New Member Meet & Greet and Registration
6:30 pm Dinner served
6:45-9:00 pm Program
9:00-9:15 pm Informal Networking
Executive and entrepreneur, Janet's career spans 30 years demonstrating a commitment to transformative leadership, excellence and mastery. Janet is President of inviteCHANGE and is also the 2012 President of ICF Global.
inviteCHANGE is a company in the business of change, offering meaningful processes, methods and skills for inviting transformation and generating wholeness through professional training programs and coaching services, including professional coach certification (ICF-ACTP) and advanced, continuing coaching education (ICF-CCE) programs.
Engaged with individuals and teams, Janet awakens latent potential and catalyzes action from the inside out, the true source of imagination, innovation and powerful creativity. Janet embraces transformative coaching as a discovery process that invites and enlivens clients to choose beliefs and behaviors that generate a magnificent life experience, a consistent expression of a person's core and essential self and a life of generative wholeness.
When you consider the definition of coaching, a thought-provoking and creative process that maximizes personal and professional potential; it becomes clear that coaching focuses on what is unknown, latent and often invisible to our clients.
Are you curious about what distinguishes the demonstration of artful coaching at the ICF Master Certified Coach level?
And, if you knew and understood this fully, are you curious what it takes to embody the mindset and skill set 100% of the time?
Personal Sovereignty is the key. It is your freedom to express your essence in any relationship, personal or professional, at will. And it's what's at the core of artful coaching and artful living. The more you as a coach will choose to embody your personal sovereignty the greater permission and invitation for your clients to do the same.
What is your level of ease to engage in an exchange that is pure curiosity without regard for past content knowledge or wisdom from your experience?
This is what we'll explore in this interactive conversation led by ICF-MCC coach, Janet Harvey, President & Director of Training for an ICF-ACTP company, inviteCHANGE and our 2012 ICF Global President.
Through audience sharing of client coaching situations we'll learn to be more artful, practice listening and curiosity skills to strengthen sovereign presence and discover the meaning of personal sovereignty and the impact on our artfulness as a coach.
As a special addition Janet will conduct a Live Coaching demo with a volunteer from our audience. This segment of the meeting will be facilitated by Dr. Cheryl Vermey, PCC.

Dean Becker to Present at the ICF Global Conference
| |
We are very pleased to announce that ICF-Philly member Dean Becker has been selected to present a session at the ICF Global Conference in London this Fall. Dean Becker is Managing Director, Adaptiv Learning Systems, and his session for the London conference is entitled "Guiding Yourself - And Your Clients - To Greater Resilience and Connection."
In this session you will first learn a practical skill to boost your own resilience - the ability to stay focused, connected, energized and optimistic in the midst of change, uncertainty or any other challenges. You will then learn how to both assess and guide your clients to greater resilience using the Hay Group/Adaptiv Resilience Workbook. (Participants will receive a complimentary copy of the workbook, which provides access to the Adaptiv Resilience Factor Inventory (RFI), a web-based assessment that measures the 7 abilities that comprise resilience, as well as an introduction to skills that boost each of these 7 resilience factors.)
Finally, Dean will share Adaptiv's latest research findings on the power of higher level connections to our jobs - and to our lives at large - to create greater resilience, and greater job and life satisfaction for our clients, our families and ourselves.
This 90 minute workshop is excerpted from the Adaptiv Resilience Coaching Certification program, an ICF CCE-approved 2 day session. As a result of attending this workshop you will be well-equipped to
introduce the concept of resilience to a coaching client, administer the RFI, provide feedback to the client, and guide your client through the completion of the Resilience Workbook.
Since 1997, Adaptiv Learning Systems has been developing and delivering state-of-the-art programs that help people become more successful at work and in the rest of their lives. For more information on Adaptiv Learning go to www.adaptivlearning.com.

Ever wonder what it's like to serve on the ICF Philadelphia Board?
|
by Jeff Kaplan, MCC (2011 President) This is my last year as an ICF Philadelphia Board member. These last few years on the Board can be summed up in three phrases: personal and professional growth, community belongingness, and leading change. - Personal and professional growth -- I came to know myself better, grew as a leader, and increased my visibility and reputation in the marketplace.
- Community belongingness -- as a Board we shared difficulties and triumphs - and regardless of whether we were grappling with a difficult issue or celebrating a major success, we were doing it together. I have made great friends for life.
- Leading change -- as a Board member I have been fortunate to be among those on the leading edge of change. The coaching "profession" and our local community are growing and expanding quickly. It has been extremely rewarding and awakening to be part of this.
What about you? Are you ready to step up and be a leader in your chosen profession? As chair of this year's nominations committee I am charged with overseeing the election process for the 2013 Board. Over the next few weeks I will be looking for dedicated and enthusiastic ICF Philadelphia members to fill several Board positions, among them: - President-Elect
- Secretary
- Vice President of Membership
- Vice President of Communications, and
- Vice President of Corporate Affairs.
Lack of prior experience can be overcome with a willingness to learn and enthusiasm for being part of this community. As a Board member you are part of a team that sets the direction of our association. You are a leader in the coaching world. Please email me at pastpresident@philadelphiacoaches.org if you or someone you know might be an ideal fit for our 2013 Board. To serve on the board, you must be an active member of ICF Philadelphia and ICF Global. The nominations period ends September 16th! So don't delay! If you are interested in a position yourself, please email me or talk to the person who currently holds a position of interest. You can be nominated by any active member. All qualified nominees will be interviewed and the best candidate will be selected to serve. All Board positions are 2-year commitments with the exception of President-Elect, which is a 3-year commitment (as President Elect, President, and Immediate Past President). I hope to hear from you!

Member Spotlight: Terri O'Donnell
| |
By Pat Weeks
Although Terri O'Donnell is new to ICF Philadelphia (having joined January 2012), she certainly is not new to coaching. Terri's husband, who is a CTI trained coach, introduced her to coaching and encouraged her to attend an introductory session. She went for one weekend with CTI and said "I want it all." She has completed her CTI education and is now working her way to certification.
As a successful, three time business owner while an at home mom; Terri has a thriving coaching practice as she continues to support her son who is preparing for college next year. Terri has refined her practice to work with women only and has discovered that her clients, peers, and women from her Corporate America days seemingly share a common thread: at times, women tend to give their power away to someone or something. Terri's response is to help them discover their own voice; and thus, their power within. Terri's favorite clients are small business owners who want to grow, change or who are in some sort of transition. Terri notes that gaining confidence is key to owning one's power and voice. She works with her clients to achieve a realization that they have had it all along. Interestingly, Terri named her practice Yellow Brick Road Coaching (www.yellowbrickroadcoaching.com). She arrived at the name because by the end of training, she realized she was coaching the scarecrow, the tin man, and the lion...all of whom, as the good witch Glinda tells them, had their power all along. Using the same analogy, Terri sees the wicked witch as a saboteur. Terri believes that great change always begins with small steps on the path to life fulfillment. Walking with her clients on this journey-- often joyful -- sometimes scary, and seeing her clients' dreams unfold, makes every day and adventure in the land of Terri O'Donnell. |

Bahama Breeze Was a Blast for 2013 Conference Co-Chair
| By Dolores Davis, 2013 Conference Co-Chair
We had a lively crowd on the sunny deck at Bahama Breeze in August. It was great to have so much support from current and former board members, members and friends. We heard from three of our very special 2013 conference volunteers - Keith Jorgenson, Kilian Kroll and Nancy West - who shared with the group from the heart, why they volunteered to work on the conference. Five new volunteers were inspired enough to step forward! Their interests range from a possible "one time" volunteer effort to working with me as co-chair. I'm very excited!
There will be a 2013 Conference Planning Committee meeting in mid-September. The exact date is still being determined. If you're interested in joining us, please email me at delr333@gmail.com for details of the meeting. The more the merrier! We will have the 2013 Conference volunteers at the meeting, along with the 2011 Committee Chairs.
The proposed agenda will include (1) sharing of knowledge from 2011, (2) site selection options, and (3) our conference theme. There may be some additional topics also. Please feel free to let me know if there's something in particular you feel is important for us to discuss.
Door prizes were drawn after the event by Past President Jeff Kaplan. Congrats to Laurie Gripshover Taylor and Alma Mathiasson who were the lucky winners of our Bahama Breeze door prizes. |
