President's Message:
Celebrating and Strengthening Our Community

Dr. Annie McKeeWelcome to a new year with ICF Philadelphia, a charter chapter of International Coach Federation created by and for coaches more than twelve years ago.We are grateful to the members and leaders who have contributed to our growing community. Our membership grew 42% in 2011! To encourage full engagement of both old and new members this year, we intend to get to know you personally, meet your professional development needs, and collaborate to benefit our clients and community through coaching.

This year our theme will be Celebrating and Strengthening Our Community because community and connection are two of our core values. Our goal is to listen to you, to respond to you, and to work with you to build and strengthen this wonderful community which not only benefits our profession but all the people we serve in our work as coaches. To meet these goals, we encourage your involvement. I invite you to share your insights and skills with us so we can learn and grow together and participate fully in our meetings and events.

Last year, ICF Philadelphia advanced coaching by focusing on leadership, recognition, and sustainability.

Our 2011 regional conference promoted coaching and specifically ICF-credentialed coaching. Many of you joined ICF Philadelphia as a direct result of the leadership of our Conference volunteers and speakers. This year we will promote the sustainability of the coaching profession by offering a Certification Special Interest Group to assist our members in obtaining the ICF credential.  We will also offer a peer coaching circle, Coaches Coaching Coaches, for members who want to continue to hone their coaching skills. And throughout the year, our Board members will collaborate with ICF Global and local media to increase recognition of coaching and our ICF Chapter.

There are many opportunities to get involved: welcoming members at meetings, serving on committees, participating in special interest groups, or working with a Board Member on core initiatives. I will be available before dinner meetings to hear your needs, interests, and requests, and can also be reached by phone (610-696-4443) or email President@philadelphiacoaches.org.

In response to the excellent reviews for Live Coaching at our Sept and Oct meetings last year, our January meeting will showcase masterful coaching demonstrations in two popular niches, wellness coaching and small business/self-employed coaching.

Wellness coaching will be demonstrated by former ICF Philadelphia president Jeff Kaplan, MCC. Jeff is a psychologist, author, consultant and trainer. In addition to his twenty years of experience as an executive coach, Jeff is also a health coach who uses assessment, health information and traditional coaching to help patients and others achieving physical, emotional, social, and spiritual health goals. The wellness coaching session will be facilitated by Meredith Betz.

Our small business coach is Karyn Greenstreet, president and founder of Passion for Business. Karyn has coached hundreds of small business owners, including several ICF-Philadelphia members to achieve sustainable success in their businesses. Her coaching demonstration will be facilitated by Lisa Kramer.

Come and observe two seasoned coaches with different styles and different niches as they masterfully coach two pre-selected ICF-Philadelphia members. Leveraging the Group Coaching Model in 2012

Group Coaching is a great win-win solution for both the coach and the client. We've heard a lot about group coaching in 2011 from guest speakers like Michelle Schnubel and others. I also have a group coaching option for my clients, and I absolutely love what it has added to my practice. Having a group coaching program allows me to:

  1. Multiply the return on my time from 1-1 to 1-many.
  2. Re-purpose the use of my time by productizing.
  3. Achieve ongoing passive revenues through productizing my group coaching program.
  4. Make an even bigger impact by helping more people.
  5. Help multiple clients solve the same problem at the same time.
  6. Ultimately, I work less and earn more with my group coaching programs.

For my clients, having the group coaching program allows them to:

  1. Get started with coaching help on a more affordable scale
  2.  Receive training and coaching in the same program
  3. Network with their peers who have similar challenges
  4. Receive accountability in a positive peer pressure context
  5. Move forward in the area of focus in a structured format
  6. Get feedback from both the coach and the other members

If you would like to explore and learn more about how you can better leverage your group coaching programs, or how you might start one as a corporate coach, then you will definitely want to join us at the next SIG call happening on

ICF Member Profile: Yoon Cannon

Dr. Annie McKeeYoon Cannon comes to coaching from an entrepreneurial background. She describes a kind of "ah hah" moment, attending an industry meeting where many of her fellow entrepreneurs were talking about the pain they were experiencing in their businesses - a great deal of which Yoon believed was avoidable. The seed was then planted to help business owners in some capacity. Two years passed before she decided to sell her existing businesses and plunge into business coaching.

Yoon came to business coaching with a rich and successful background: a marketing company with six branch locations; a performing arts center with 35 faculty members, an associated production company, an entertainment venue and retail store. She found, after selling these businesses and taking some time off, her phone started ringing with people who needed her help. One project led to another and so Paramount Business Coach was born.

The biggest surprise Yoon encountered was moving from having had a lot of folks on her payroll to being a solopreneur, and adopting a whole new way of having to achieve results without resources like a full time office manager or a sales manager.

Yoon loves all her clients for different reasons, but she does favor those who have employees of their own because their needs are multi-dimensional. In the end, her most enjoyable clients are those who are hungry, energetic and who come to the table with questions and an appetite to act on the answer.

Given 2 weeks of free professional development, Yoon would get some training on working with business owners who don't want to be "corporate," which they define as not creating a strategic plan or keeping track of results at the same time they want to be successful.

When asked which accomplishment she is most proud of, Yoon remembers Michael - simple guy with a community college background who opened up one of her branches and eventually achieved the $50 million milestone. He wrote Yoon a heartfelt letter thanking her for having transformed his life...a very rewarding testimonial.

Yoon has one quote in her office from Charles Stanley: "You can become barren in your busyness." As entrepreneurs, Yoon says, it's so easy to get buried by the busyness of growing a business, and miss out on the riches that come from important relationships. Over the past 20 years although her businesses may have changed, her core ideology has remained the same. For Yoon, it has always been about changing lives.
