 ICF Philadelphia

June/2011

President's Message

June is here. In Vedic this means this is the season of Pitta. So, be sure to avoid further aggregating your "Pitta" fire if you already have a "Pitta Dosha Imbalance." In English, this means avoid excessive alcohol, hot & spicy foods, over-stimulation (turn off that cable TV and shut down the Internet already), and exposure to the sun.

If you missed our Annual Business Meeting, which was held on May 19th, please check out our website for the PowerPoint. Located in the Members Area you can see our list of accomplishments for 2010/2011 (through April), upcoming priorities, income and expenses, and membership report. We had a very nice turnout for the meeting and during the meeting we approved revisions to our bylaws (see member area of our website for the current bylaws).

Big News - PACA is Now ICF Philadelphia

What does this mean?

As announced last month, PACA is now "Doing Business as" ICF Philadelphia. We have retained the legal name of Philadelphia Area Coaches Alliance (PACA) and, as such PACA remains a recognized entity for tax purposes. ICF Philadelphia is our "brand" which is linked to PACA for tax purposes.

What will change?

You will begin seeing and hearing our new brand on all our written, electronic and verbal communications.

To whom should I write checks?

Checks should be made out to ICF Philadelphia. You will likely still see credit and debit transaction receipts from PACA for quite some time before we make changes to these services.

What if I forget?

No worries. Since we have retained PACA, if you write a check to PACA we will still gladly accept it.

Why did we change our name?

The Board of Directors and a large number of members strongly believe in the importance of a tighter association with the International Coach Federation (ICF), of which we are a Chartered Chapter. In line with this year's strategy of Leadership, Recognition, and Sustainability we see this change as a critical step for our members and the future of this Chapter. By doing so, we're able to benefit from ICF's brand recognition while still maintaining our uniqueness.

Why not ICF Philadelphia Area Chapter or PACA - an ICF Chapter or ICF Philadelphia/Delaware/Southern New Jersey?

While there are a number of good choices, we finalized on a name that had brevity and maximized our association with the ICF. We realize ICF Philadelphia does not roll off the tongue as easily as PACA, and you may find us referring to our organization with any number of pet names that are already beginning to surface, such as ICF-P, ICF Philly, and ICF Phila.

What's in store for the future?

We believe that the field of coaching is changing quicker than ever. Our commitment is to keep up with these changes and always do what we believe is in the best interest of our members. We will keep you informed with any other developments.

Reminder:   Our second annual Summer "Picnic" at Bahama Breeze Restaurant, located King of Prussia (next to the IMAX theatre) is happening in August. There will be live music, great food (including desserts!) and an open bar. This event replaces the regular monthly dinner meeting and it is the one and only dinner meeting event of the year that is 100% socializing fun and where we encourage you to introduce your friends and family to your coaching friends and colleagues.

Finally, I want to recognize Marjorie Johnson and Cindy Howes who have been doing a remarkable job as co-chairs for the November Conference. I also want to recognize Ginger Jarrett and her committee for the RFP process and outreach which has resulted in a slate of outstanding speakers that you will be hearing more about soon. Please start spreading the word about the conference. Help us reach our goal of 250 attendees! ICF Philadelphia is off to a strong start!

As always, please let me and the other Board members know how we can best serve you.

With gratitude and respect,

Member Spotlight - Lisa Tierney

Coach Lisa Tierney (TierneyCoaching-Consulting.com) notes that people have always opened up to her early on. As she began her marketing consulting and business development practice, she found many clients confessing their personal problems, such as anxiety and familial issues. She decided to officially incorporate her gift of listening by adding coaching to her portfolio. Her clientele are predominantly professional service providers (i.e. accounting, law, engineering and architectural firms). Her success is based on the fact that coaching addresses the self-perceived obstacles that keep these professionals from achieving success. As with all good coaches, Lisa has always understood that, instead of telling her clients what to do, it is more effective to help them discover their path themselves.

When asked what surprises her about coaching, Lisa responds that she is grateful that she continues to love coaching as much as she does. Further, when she first announced that she would start her own practice (traditional marketing consulting combined with coaching) some of her colleagues weren't sure that it would work. However, Lisa has found that the coaching element has been vital in the success of attracting and retaining clients. The concept of an ongoing process ... a state of being that is often missing in a corporate environment has proven the draw that helps her close the deals.

Asked what she would do given two week so of free professional development, Lisa quickly responds that she would love to somehow facilitate a program whereby access to coaching could become more mainstream or affordable; alternatively, using her skills, she might want create a program on conflict assessment that might be incorporated into mainstream education - at the high school or college level.

Lisa is most proud of her ability to penetrate corporate America, embracing and applauding individuality at these organizations.  Recently, she was able to repair a very strained relationship by facilitating a bridge of trust between two partners at a client firm, which has led to a very positive shift.

Asked what words she lives by, Lisa responds that she often jokes about making tee shirts that read, "Getting what you want is easy; figuring out what you want is the hard part."

Help Is On the Way!

By Colleen Bracken, ICF Global Liaison

We all need a little help. And some of us, like me, need a lot of help! Fortunately, as the coaching profession grows, so does the support that is available to help us continuously improve our coaching and grow our businesses. That support comes in many forms, and I'd like to highlight two that are readily available, and included as part of your ICF membership.

Support #1:
OTHER COACHES (Of course!)

If you are reading this article, then you already appreciate the value of being part of a community of coaches. How would you like to expand that community to include 19,000 coaches from 100 different countries that make up the ICF? Okay, maybe that's too big a conversation! But through one of the global SIGs (Special Interest Groups), you can easily talk with coaches across the state, the country, or the ocean about what you care about and what you're curious about. There are currently more than 30 active SIGs, meeting via conference call monthly to talk about things like
  • Brain-based Coaching
  • Coaching and Psychotherapy
  • Coaching Social Entrepreneurs
  • Global Healthcare Coaching
  • Energy Work
  • Internal Corporate Coaching
Check out the full list at ICF

Support #2:
SPECIALIZED TOOLS & SERVICES FOR COACHES

When I was on the ICF Global Membership & Community Committee, we would receive proposals from companies who wanted to market their services to the ICF membership. We reviewed their proposals, assessed their offerings for quality and applicability, and negotiated the best arrangements. It was fun playing "Wheeler Dealer", and very interesting to see what's out there for our profession! Below is a partial list with brief descriptions so you can take a look and see if there is anything that might help you.

  • 5050Biz - a virtual office suite with web/video capabilities, virtual conference rooms, shared document storage, and much more
  • Annuity Managers Agency, LLC - Life and Health Insurance
  • AudioAcrobat- record and publish all types of calls including conferences and teleclasses,
  • Berrett-Koehler Books- lots of great books on coaching and related things that coaches care about
  • Choice - THE magazine of professional coaching.
  • CRG - Assessment tools
  • International Journal of Coaching in Organizations (IJCO)- an academic journal for our profession
  • JournalEngine- a journaling platform specifically for coaching clients
  • Practice Pay Solutions - ecommerce and merchant services
  • Staples - Office Supplies and much more
  • The Coaches Console - widely used on-line coaching management tool

You can find the entire list and details about your ICF discount at ICF

I'd love to hear from you about a Global SIG you've discovered, a product that you have found helpful, or any comments or questions you have that relate to our global community of coaches. Colleen Bracken

ICF Philadelphia Regional Conference Update

By Marjorie Johnson, ICF President Elect and Conference Co-Chair

By now you have seen the save the date flier on our web site and you've marked your calendars! Please see below for a list of things you can do to help promote the conference and be on the lookout later this month for an e-mail informing you of the ONE WEEK PRE-SALE at greatly reduced prices!

There are 25 good reasons for you to attend this conference. The first 23 are the terrific national and international speakers that will be presenting. The list will be confirmed by the end of May and announced shortly thereafter. The 24th reason is what this conference can do for you and your coaching practice. Feel free to put this reason ahead of all the others! And the 25th reason is how your attendance will energize and enrich your coaching community.

As you know, our keynote speaker will be nationally known author and Emotional Intelligence expert Annie McKee. In addition, our session presenters will address three topic areas:

  • Business Building,
  • Coaching Tools, and
  • Advanced Coaching skills.

Over lunch, an outstanding panel of experts will address the role of the coach in addressing five coaching domains: the Mental, Spiritual, Emotional, Physical and Technical aspects of coaching. We will wrap-up the day with ICF President Ed Modell speaking about the future of coaching. Don't miss your chance to register at an extremely affordable pre sale rate and to choose your workshops before they fill up!

It takes a village of coaches to make this conference the best it can be. We need every member and friend of ICF: Philadelphia (PACA) to help us spread the word so everyone in the New York to DC region hears about this conference and has the chance to register. In this age of electronic marketing and social networking, there are simple things you can do to help:

  • First, here is a link to the "Save the Date" flyer on the ICF Philadelphia website, shortened for your convenience: http://bit.ly/jHqrmd
  • Post this link on your various social networking sites, e.g., LinkedIn and Facebook. If you use it as a LinkedIn Update, it will automatically feed to all your contacts. Very cool! Cut and paste these words and display them with the link:

  • Share the registration notification as soon as it is posted to everyone on your network!

And, last but not least, please contact Volunteer coordinators Becky Scott and Helen Morris if you have a few hours to spare to help us plan this conference. Technical help and event sponsors are urgently needed.

Book Review: A Great Book for Coaches

By Cindy Howes, Executive Career Coach and Certified Guerrilla Job Search Coach

Guerrilla MarketingGuerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 3.0: How to Stand Out from the Crowd and Tap into the Hidden Job Market Using Social Media and 999 Other Tactics Today by Jay Conrad Levinson and David E.Perry, May 2011.

Finding a new job can be a daunting prospect for anyone, no matter the age or experience, and Guerrilla Marketing techniques are designed to make you stand out from competitors.  They help you identify the companies that you would like to work for and, with some research, allow you to network and even talk to the hiring manager's boss.  In this book's third edition the authors have identified all the ways to ensure that, when recruiters go looking for someone with matching qualifications, they will find you.  Guerrilla Marketing, simply put, is about placing you in the driver's seat.

There are the usual questions: Are such techniques too out there?  Will these unconventional methods turn off hiring managers?  Will they intrigue them?  Well, David Perry suggests waiving your hesitation and trying Guerilla tactics with a company you have already applied to but did not get a positive response from, where traditional methods have struck out.  The first goal is not just to get an interview, but a business meeting with the person who has the power to hire you.  The tools to do this include a Guerrilla resume and a Guerrilla cover letter, which are both about proving you can solve the company's problems and have done so before.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should say that I am certified to use the Guerrilla Job Search materials, but that's not the reason I chose to review this book.  Above all else, I believe Guerilla methods help people get new jobs faster and with less stress.  Finally, the newest edition of this book makes Guerilla Marketing's latest techniques available to everyone.  It puts you in the driver's seat.
