| President's Message
What if?
What if your coaching business tripled this year? What if you experienced greater joy AND peace of mind next month then during your entire life thus far? What if tomorrow you receive a call that profoundly changes your life for the better?
I invite you today, tomorrow, this month, and throughout the rest of this year to stand in the place of "What if UP?" (e.g., "What if things go really well?") rather than "What if DOWN?" (E.g., "What if it doesn't work out?").
I borrowed the "What if UP" versus "What if DOWN" concept from Mindy Audlin, author of What If It All Goes Right? Creating a New World of Peace, Prosperity & Possibilities, and I presented this at last month's dinner meeting. I also proposed this thinking during a recent lunch meeting with another PACA Director when we were brainstorming creative ways to help you and the rest of the PACA membership.
"What does every member want?," I asked. "Clients, everyone wants more clients," she responded. This got us thinking. What if we found ways to attract prospective clients to our website and to our members' coaching services by providing resources clients want? What if we made it easy and interesting for prospects to virtually get to know our coaches before even picking up the phone or drafting an email?
The world of coaching is changing rapidly. Heck, the world is changing rapidly. Let's not only harness change; let's get ahead of it. What if we create a website in which clients could rate their coaches?
You can rate books, your new flat screen television, your professors, and even your friends. Why not rate your coach training school? Imagine if members could see numeric ratings and verbatim comments for every accredited training school before getting out the credit card? Why not allow our clients to rate us? Imagine a prospective client goes to the PACA website, sees your picture, reads your profile and sees that 52 clients rated you favorably, supplemented with comments such as, "She helped me reach my goals and far more," or "His coaching was life transformational." What if we made it easy for our clients to tell the world what they are already telling us? Imagine how quickly, easily, and shamelessly your clients could promote you.
So, is all this going to happen? I don't know. But, what if it does?
With gratitude and respect,
Jeff Kaplan, 2011 PACA President president@philadelphiacoaches.org

All about CCEU Credits | |
PACA is committed to bringing you high quality programs that inspire, engage and perhaps even provoke. And if you are an International Coach Federation (ICF) credentialed coach, you will need CCEUs in order to renew your credential.
So as an added bonus to our programming, we are making sure you can receive credit whether it is through your attendance at our monthly meetings (up to over 10 credits per year) or our annual Philadelphia Area conference.
Receiving CCEUs at PACA monthly meetings is easy:
- Indicate at the sign-in table that you want the CCEUs.
- Be present for the entire speaker portion of the evening.
- Make sure to pick up your certificate at the end of the evening. Elizabeth Hechtman distributes them.
- Retain your certificate for submission to ICF credentialing.
Keep in mind that you will probably be accumulating credits over a period of years. You are responsible for collecting and keeping certificates safe. They are your "Golden Tickets" to retaining your ICF credential. We cannot distribute certificates except on the evening of the event and we cannot replace lost certificates. You may want to scan the certificate and save it on your hard drive as soon as you get home so you have an electronic record. We urge you to store your certificates in a safe place.
Also, we are in the thick of planning our annual conference for November 11, 2011. We'll be offering a full day of seminars and workshops complete with CCEUs. Watch for details in the coming months.
And did you know that you can quickly and easily earn additional CCEUs by participating in the many ICF conference calls that are offered? You can find these on the ICF website under events. Check them out. They are interesting and offer you credits too! http://www.coachfederation.org/research-education/virtual-education/
Finally, check the ICF website for the specific requirements for your credential at: http://www.coachfederation.org/research-education/continuingcoacheducation/
We look forward to seeing you at our PACA events.

PACA Conference Update
| |
By Marjorie Johnson, President Elect and PACA Conference Co-Chair
The PACA Conference being planned for November 11, 2011 now has a name: "Coaching Excellence: Foundations and Frontiers." The name captures the breadth, depth and scope of what we know will be an outstanding opportunity for coaches to gather, learn and grow.
"Coaching Excellence: Foundations & Frontiers" will provide sound coaching principles, practices and information on certification as well as expert information on emerging frontiers including EQ, Brain Based coaching, Mindfulness and some of the most current research on ROI.
We have secured our conference location as well: Penn State Great Valley at the intersection of Routes 29 and 202 in Great Valley, PA, is easily accessible from all directions and a great facility that will easily accommodate up to 350 attendees along with vendors and sponsors.
The Program and Speaker Committee is putting together a slate of over 15 presentations which will include an exciting "big name" keynote speaker. As an added value, there will be relevant vendors and sponsors and plenty of time for networking not only with other coaches but also with members of some of our partner organizations such as ASTD and
Mark your calendars now! Don't miss this exciting opportunity to participate in a powerful regional coaching conference presented by PACA. Early Bird specials will fill up quickly so watch this spot each month for further details!

Corporate Coaching Corner
| |
by: Yoon Cannon, PACA Corporate SIG Chair
Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their work:
If one falls down,
his friend can help him up.
But pity the man who falls
and has no one to help him up!
....(12) Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10;12
We all know that there is strength in numbers. Even animals innately know they will succeed far greater together than alone. Although a wolf is stronger than a dog, a pack of dogs will always overcome any one wolf they find traveling alone. Flocks, herds, packs, communities, villages -- they're all a collection of numbers that deliver greater protection, strength and power.
So, how about you? Have you been traveling it alone in your journey as a corporate coach? Have you tapped into the power of your own corporate coaching community at PACA?
As solo practitioners we're often pulled in so many directions, having to wear not just the "coaching" hat, but also all of the other hats that go into building and running a successful coaching practice.
Our Special Interest Group (SIG) of corporate coaches meets monthly, every month, on Friday morning, 9:00 am -10:00 am, the week following the Thursday evening PACA dinner meeting. We gather conveniently on a bridgeline, so even the busiest of coaches can easily fit it in. If you are a corporate coach, I encourage you to put this meeting on your calendar each month. Please add the following to your calendar a few days in advance of the Corporate SIG meeting:
- RSVP to YoonCannon@ParamountBusinessCoach.com (alternatively, call me at 215-292-4947)
And add this to your calendar as a recurring monthly meeting:
- PACA Corporate SIG bridgeline: # (218) 339-3600 PIN: 242252 #
In brief, from participating in the Corporate SIG you will be:
- Refreshed
- Reminded
- Realigned
- Rejuvenated
No matter the number of members attending each SIG call, you will find value. Some months we have a discussion with 12-15 corporate coaches and we all leave with multiple nuggets of wisdom. Other months we have an intimate group of 2 or 3 corporate coaches on the line, giving us the chance for much deeper insights and discussion on each member's topic of interest. For example, during January's intimate SIG call, three coaches enjoyed a highly productive discussion that included shared insights and best practices on areas like:
- reducing resistance to the concept of coaching
- the key corporate contacts to get onboard
- how to overcome clients' tendencies to not understand the differences between goals, objectives, measures of success, vision
Our "cord of three" coaches leveraged Q-storming insights in response to each other's specific challenges -- very cool!
Here are some tips from Dana Wickes which I gathered from our January call:
- Try going into each conversation from the perspective of not knowing anything, because you might think you already know the answer, and you might be surprised.
- We're so enthroned in the problem solving mindset that we jump right into the first possible solution, when that solution may not really be the best solution because the problem wasn't the key problem. We need to practice asking more questions to get to the root of issue or concern.
- Language and context can be so important; two different departments in the same company can mean different things when using the same term.
Thanks for those great tips Dana!
In closing, if you're a corporate coach/business coach, I encourage you to tap into the power of the community you have in PACA's Corporate SIG. Regardless if it's 2 or 20, there's greater strength in numbers. There is no need to travel your journey alone.
Yoon Cannon
Chair, PACA Corporate SIG
