March/2011

President's Message

"Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."  --Margaret Mead

While researching solutions to juvenile delinquency for my Junior English term paper, I noticed that RICA, a state and county residential treatment facility for troubled kids, offered volunteer opportunities.  Unfulfilled with my budding computer science career I decided to give them a call.  Three months and 218 hours later, RICA management hired me and I changed my major and career path - a decision that 19-years later would lead me to become a professional coach.  Twelve years after that I'm more excited about the field of coaching than ever before.

Volunteerism can be the doorway to a rewarding career, as it was for me, for my client who was hired by a company that turned her down in the interview but took her up on her offer to volunteer, for another PACA Board member, and for countless others.  But volunteerism in itself is beautifully rewarding.  Unselfishly being in service around a common cause designed to make the world a better place -- what could be more gratifying then this!?

And, is this not the best time in our lives to volunteer?  The world is changing rapidly -- people are awakening to who we really are while old paradigms about human behavior are collapsing.  As with most transformations, this global change is creating hope and optimism in some and fear and uncertainty in others.  Those who recognize the opportunity, focus on the positive, and embrace, even lead the change are likely to fare quite well over the next several years.  Those who resist will likely struggle.

As professional coaches, I believe we have the permission and responsibility to serve others in their own awakening.  We do this with our paid clients, but we also do it through volunteerism and everyday gestures.  We offer hope by spreading the word about coaching.  We help people believe in themselves when we hold them creative, resourceful and whole.  We increase our capacity to help others by supporting and educating each other.  We keep the momentum by acknowledging each other and keeping the journey fun.  We create abundance for everyone by reaching across the aisle to other service providers.

During the February dinner meeting each Board member spoke about PACA's initiatives for this year.  They invited you to join them in raising awareness about coaching, supporting and educating new and existing members, generating new ways to acknowledge each other and have fun, and to help us connect with other helping professionals.

I invite you to go to www.philadelphiacoaches.org, click "Contact us" on the left toolbar, and send an email to someone on the Board, asking how you can volunteer.  For only a few hours each month you can make a difference for PACA, coaching, and the world.

With gratitude and respect,

Jeff Kaplan, 2011 PACA President

Upcoming Meetings

February's meeting with Dr. Bob Bugarelli was a WOW.  If you missed it and want to know what was said, check out the Member Resources section.  You'll find an audio recording of the program.

In March, we'll explore the power that's within each of us to create the lives we want. Dr. Dana Lightman will teach us proven steps to fire up our client's innate power and keep it flowing.  We'll learn the role of interpretation and how to use it to create positive patterns....and more!

Dr. Bob spoke about stress management and its importance in our overall health.  Many, if not most, of our clients struggle with this.  In April's meeting, resilience will be our focus and Dean Becker will lead us.  Dean spoke to us in the fall and he's back to continue the discussion.  This is not a repeat of his previous discussion.  So whether you were at the fall meeting or not, you'll benefit from hearing what he has to say in April.

In May, we have a unique opportunity to learn more about the intersection of yoga practices in coaching.  More to come on that, so stay tuned.

And don't forget to join our Monthly Corporate Special Interest Group (SIG) Call, on March 18 from 9-10 am led by Yoon Cannon. Call in:  218.339.3500, PIN: 242252#

Member Corner -  Susan Strug Souffie

 by Patricia Weeks

Suzane

Susan Souffie is new to PACA and also new to coaching, recently celebrating her first year in business.  After 12 years in HR she felt dissatisfied and decided to start her own business. She hired a coach to help her with her business plan and got far more than she was expecting from that coaching engagement. She found coaching to be an avenue to deep and lasting change. Based on her own experience, she believes that if one is open to coaching, it can impact almost every aspect of one's life.

She is scheduled to complete the Accomplishment Coaching accreditation program this July. In addition to starting her own business and entering coach training, she married and moved into her dream home, and is joyfully expecting a baby in April. Susan credits coaching as the catalyst for profound and rapid change in all aspects of her life.

Her coaching practice is focused on helping people design their lives from the inside out. Susan's favorite clients are new to the workforce, graduating college seniors or recent grads. She loves their "phenomenal energy". She also finds that rising stars, entrepreneurs, and those in transition (promotion, laid off, marriage, moving) can be enthusiastic about making changes and enjoyable clients to work with.  She notes that one of the tenets of her training is that when a coach is open to accessing the clients' vision and wisdom, that coach can serve many different types of clients.

When asked for words to live by, Susan said: "If you can conceive it, you can do it.  She adds:  "Do it now...there really is no time like the present." She advises that there is always going to be some reason to put things off (more money, more time, less stress), but if we can face the fear of the unknown and jump into it, we will not regret it. For coaches, Susan urges everyone to train in an accredited program.  Not only does formal training raise the bar, but, she notes "taking it to the next level is important to the clients we serve".  To learn more about Susan visit her website here.

Coaching Conference Update

Coaching conference Co-Chairs Marjorie Johnson and Cindy Howes have successfully recruited a dynamic team of subcommittee leaders to help plan a one-day PACA-sponsored conference on coaching to be held on November 11, 2011.  Leading the way are:

  • Marketing Co-Chairs Suzanne Perry and Dean Becker
  • Volunteer Co-Chairs Helen Morris and Becky Scott
  • Vendors/Sponsorship Co-Chairs Chris Coward and Amy Haller
  • Logistics & Planning Co-Chairs Frank Podietz and Diane Seader
  • Programming & Speakers Co-Chairs Ginger Jarrett and Christo Schutte
  • Finance & Budget Chair Roy Millsap

Many thanks to PACA members who have stepped forward to work on the conference. More volunteers are needed for planning through event execution and staging the event on November 11. If you would like to join any of the teams listed above, please contact the chairperson or send an email to Helen Morris, HelenMorris@Epiph-Partners.com or Becky Scott, Becky@BeckyScottCoaching.com.

PACA members were recently asked to respond to a survey that will provide guidance to the group for planning conference sessions and speakers. Now in the process of being analyzed, survey results will be used to issue requests for proposals (RFPs) as well as to prioritize and select conference programming.

The goal of the conference is to advance the field of coaching by offering opportunities for coaches to share best practices, network, and improve and enrich their coaching practices. The goal is to attract 200-250 professional coaches and attendees interested in coaching. Advertising about the conference will blanket a 120 mile radius of Philadelphia, including Washington DC and NYC.
