Whales in Watercolor
From an artist deeply connected
to the souls of whales ~
Salt, North Atlantic Humpback Whale by Peggy Oki
When I first saw Peggy Oki's art at an American Cetacean Society conference, it took my breath away. In an exhibition room filled with nothing but whale art, I was drawn like a moth to light to Peggy's stunning watercolors.
For me, the next best thing to actually being with whales is gazing at their likenesses created by talented artists. I am honored to now be carrying Peggy's exquisite whale images--and at a cost reasonable for everyone.
The image above is of Salt, perhaps the most famous humpback whale in the world. Salt is one of the first humpback whales ever to be named, first sighted in Stellwagen Bank in 1976.
For whale lovers, displaying an image of Salt is honoring a significant--and positive!--chapter in the history of whales. Less than ten years before she was sighted and named, humpbacks whales were still being slaughtered in New England waters. Salt survived, and went on to mother at least eleven calves and is grandmother to at least five grandcalves. She is considered the grand dame of North Atlantic Humpback Whales, surely a symbol of their perseverance.
