Dear CYD Friend,
I am thankful for CYD, and I want to share my story.
|
My name is Shanay Benton, and I joined CYD in the 4th grade. I participated weekly through middle and high school. At CYD I had access to mentors and teachers, who taught me important life skills and showed me a world outside of my neighborhood. They told me to stay in school, make good choices and to go to college. CYD was there for me no matter what obstacles or challenges I faced.
|
|
Because no one in my family had ever attended college, I didn't know it was possible for me. The first time CYD took me on a college tour, I knew college was not only possible, but was essential for my success. I graduated from Tuskegee University two years ago and this summer I earned my master's degree in education.
|
Currently, I teach 2nd grade at William Boyd Elementary, the school I attended as a child and where CYD begins for our students. If I didn't have CYD's support, I don't know where I would be today - many of my neighborhood friends didn't even graduate from high school.
Today I serve CYD as a volunteer and as a board member.
CYD shaped my development, that is why I give back and provide leadership for CYD students today. I grew up in the same neighborhoods, surrounded by violence, drugs, teenage pregnancy and high school drop outs. When students begin CYD they have an average family income of $15,000. With our support and hard work, they break the cycle of poverty.
Will you join me and make a difference in the life of a child today?
CYD's success is only made possible by support of our kind donors and volunteers, whose gifts provide opportunities for our students to discover a different life. Donate today - together we can create dreams!
Thankfully yours,
Shanay Benton
