How Do You Avoid Double Talk When Interviewing Existing Franchisees?
 By Dr. John Hayes

One of the most important steps in the due diligence process of buying a franchise is to interview existing franchisees. I recommend that you interview as many as possible and that you visit at least one and spend at least part of a day exploring the franchise opportunity. After working in a franchise for a day, or a weekend, you might decide it's not really for you!

Ed's Rant
Each issue I'll provide my weekly Rant regarding some aspect of franchising. This week I take issue with provisions in certain franchise agreements that require franchisees to pay a fee, althought sometimes nominal, to attend an annual franchise convention. I come from an era that used the annual franchise convention as an opportunity to thank the franchisees and provide educational programs. Their only cost was for travel and lodging.  I would hope that franchisors that charge a convention fee to its franchisees reciprocate with appropriate benefits.
We hope you find our newsletter helpful. If you have any comments or suggestions regarding content please send us an e-mail.
