Wipe out name calling in 2011...
National No Name-Calling Week takes place across the US January 24-28, 2011, to "focus national attention on the problem of name-calling in schools, and provide students and educators with the tools and inspiration to launch an on-going dialogue about ways to eliminate name-calling in their communities." (nonamecallingweek.org)
Need help initiating a discussion about name-calling in your classroom? Check out Lorimer's Deal With It series. These classroom resources include activities, discussion starters and quizzes.
For a student perspective, Deborah Ellis's We Want You to Know (Coteau Books) is a thoughtful and candid book about bullying in schools. The students Ellis interviewed for this book raise questions about the way parents, teachers and school administrators cope with bullies. They talk about which methods have helped and which ones, with the best of intentions, have failed to protect them.
