Garden State Teen Book Award...
Fakie, by Tony Varrato and published by Lobster Press, has been nominated for the 2011 Garden State Teen Book Awards, New Jersey's Readers' Choice award.

The book is also currently on the shortlist for the 2011 Golden Sower - Nebraska's Children's Choice Book Award - and was a YALSA Quick Pick.
Library Media Connection said of Fakie: "An excellent novel for male teen readers. It is short, action-packed...a good read-aloud for the classroom...full of suspense and drama..."

Good things in small packages...
Now available: the first four titles in the Rapid Reads  series of short novels for adult readers. In our increasingly fast-paced world we believe there is a need for well-written, well-told novels that can be read in one sitting. Rapid Reads features great writing and great storytelling in a small package.

With titles from Gail Bowen, Zoe Whittall, William Kowalski and Medora Sale, there is something for everyone. These short novels are ideal as a quick read but also perfect for adult literacy and those striving to improve their reading. Reading guides are available here.

CM said of The Spider Bites: "Well-written and exciting...sure to find a market."

Hot Fresh Sites...
The Orca machine shop has been busy banging together some great new book-specific websites full of facts, fun and, yes, boogers.

New sites for upcoming books:
  • Richard Was a Picker by Carolyn Beck and Ben Hodson. Ugh. Help Richard find a tissue. Read the Booger Boy comic.
  • The Sea Wolves - Living Wild in the Great Bear Rainforest by Ian McAllister and Nicholas Read. This is the companion book to The Salmon Bears (another great site) with photos and facts on these amazing animals.
  • Salt the Trilogy. While we are sure that Brangelina would love the book, this has nothing to to do with the movie, and is guaranteed not to include any Hollywood gossip. Read an excerpt of Gool, the next installment of the trilogy.
And don't miss the other sites: Media Meltdown - great facts and fun about media literacy, and Food Fight, with games and resources about the food system, based on two bestselling titles in the Graphic Guide Adventure series.

Surf, baby.

Food Fight...
Want to toss some food around? Learn about the food supply system? Read a great graphic novel?
Food Fight, the latest installment in the Graphic Guide Adventure series is here. Also live is a new dedicated website  with games, resources and information about your food and how it reaches your plate.

School Library Journal said of the previous book in the series, Media Meltdown: "An excellent choice for developing media literacy...The design and layout are colorful and fast paced. The text is well written and paired with useful imagery."

One Tree at a Time...
Orca Book Publishers is committed to environmentally sustainable publishing. The majority of Orca titles are printed on post-consumer waste paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which saves trees, water and electricity.
