Junior Library Guild...
Six recent and upcoming Orca titles have been picked up by the Junior Library Guild.
Last season's graphic novel Ramp Rats, along with Paralyzed, an Orca Sports novel by Jeff Rud, made the fall selections.
In Spring 2009 look for Riley Park, an Orca Soundings novel, as well as Absolute Pressure by Sigmund Brouwer and Slam Dunk by Kate Jaimet, both Orca Sports novels. Rounding out the six was Soccer Sabotage, the third graphic novel in the Graphic Guide Adventure series by Liam O'Donnell amd Mike Deas.
The JLG provides books to public and school libraries and offers 28 different reading levels from preschool through high school, all with an emphasis on selecting only the best and most worthwhile titles to engage young minds and foster a love of books and reading.

YALSA Quick Picks...
The final list of titles selected for the Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers list was announced following the American Library Association Conference in Denver this week.
Two Orca Soundings titles made the list:
Pain and Wastings by Carrie Mac and Middle Row by Sylvia Olsen.
The Quick Picks list, presented annually at the ALA Midwinter Meeting suggests books that teens, ages 12-18, will pick up on their own and read for pleasure. It is geared to the teenager who, for whatever reason, does not like to read.

Sidney Taylor Book Award...

Gravity, a teen novel by Leanne Lieberman, has been named a "Notable Book of Jewish Content" in the teen category as part of the Sidney Taylor Book Awards from the Association of Jewish Librarians.
Kirkus said of the book: "Heartfelt - a must for Jewish and GLBT collections."
And the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books said: "A remarkably sensitive and credible portrait of a girl whose faith collides with her sexuality, and who refuses to compromise either."
Gravity was also the winner of the Orca "So You Think You Can Write" novel contest. I guess she can!
