THIRD STATE BUDGET IN NINE MONTHS: HOW WILL CUTS AFFECT YOU? |
|
The
independent Legislative Analyst's
Office (LAO) has released its analysis of the 2009-10 State
Budget signed into law
last week by Governor Schwarzenegger. But the success of this budget
depends on the accuracy of economic projections,
which have not
been good so far. The likelihood is strong that California will face an additional shortfall
and state leaders will be back at the table again in just a few months. In the
meantime, local government and education will feel the impacts. OC Superintendent of Schools Bill Habermehl
reports that Orange County received $300 million in federal
economic stimulus funding but the State has cut $500 million! That's over $800
per student. Around 3,500 OC education professionals may be impacted by these cuts. As noted by the
LAO, the
budget affects local
government revenues--OC cities and county--most
notably through Prop 1A
suspensions, redevelopment agency
fund shifts,
mandates and Williamson Act Program suspension. View LAO's full report here. See how the budget affects your county and your city here. For more information, contact Alicia Berhow.

NEW MAN IN TOWN: KEMPTON STARTS AS OCTA'S NEW CHIEF
|
The wait for OCTA's new CEO is over. OCTA welcomed the
arrival of former Caltrans Director Will Kempton for his first day on the job yesterday
morning at OCTA headquarters.
Kempton brings to OCTA a broad understanding of transportation programs and
policies from
his experience that
spans the ranks
of government from local to the federal level. Setting the
tone as a model public transportation employee, he plans to
take an OCTA bus from his temporary residence in Anaheim to work every day. During his first week, Mr. Kempton will be meeting with OCBC's OCMoves Steering Committee and directors for an exclusive high-level roundtable discussion on Friday, August 7. The Business Council looks forward to working closely with Mr. Kempton to enhance the county's infrastructure and long-term economic vitality of the region. COMPANIES' INCENTIVES, RESOURCES AND TOOLS LOOK TO
SAVE OC BUSINESSES MONEY
Last week, OCBC's Economic Development Committee welcomed a presentation
of economic development tools from Project Manager Tod Sword of Southern California Edison (SCE). Through its Economic Development Services (EDS), SCE's goal is to support the
regional economy, job
retention, job growth, and lower
electricity
rates. Cool
resources include a GIS
web-based toolset and economic impact analysis--so a
business or city can calculate benefits to the local
economy. Looking
ahead, SCE's GIS toolset will include an industrial building and site database,
customized demographic reports and industry cluster mapping to retain, expand
and attract businesses in Orange County.
In
addition, the
Business
Council is partnering with SCE's Regional Economic Development (RED) Team to
secure regulatory relief to help retain
employers and jobs. This RED Team scored a
major victory this past week to assist a major high-tech
manufacturer, currently employing over 600 employees. For more information, contact Dr. Wallace Walrod.

OCBC STAFFER, ALICIA BERHOW, REPORTS ON EDUCATION CONFERENCE IN VIRGINIA
Last
month, Sue Neuen of the California Science Center,
invited OCBC to participate and lend the
voice of business, by sending a representative to the National Science
Resources Center Conference in Alexandria,
VA.
My
position as Director of Workforce Development for OCBC, gave me the opportunity
to join Buena Park Junior High, along with schools from
across the country, to assist in the process of creating a strategic plan to
incorporate strong, all-inclusive science programs in our schools. This
particular conference prepared our team to develop and implement a five-year
strategic plan to prepare Orange
County students for the
technology-based jobs of tomorrow in an increasingly global economy.
The
theme of the conference was, "meeting the challenge of science
education in a high-stakes environment." Given that the United States faces international competition
from China and India, it is
crucial that schools have the opportunity to expand their programs, seek
support from their communities and from business... [Read more] For more information, contact Alicia Berhow.

|
The Irvine Company
announced last week that Verizon Wireless has
renewed its 10-year lease for its West Area and Southern California
Region headquarters - a 30-acre campus in Irvine Spectrum.
OCBC's Lucy Dunn called the Verizon Wireless lease renewal "fantastic
news" for Orange County's job market and economy. "Verizon Wireless'
decision to renew means more than 2,300 jobs will remain in Orange
County. At a time when unemployment is still rising, we're
thrilled that California and the county will continue to benefit from
the presence of this innovative industry leader." [Read more] See coverage in the OC Metro | OC Register | Orange County Business Journal
