OCBC TAKES POSITIONS ON UPCOMING SPECIAL ELECTION BALLOT PROPOSITIONS
yesnoWith a $42 billion state budget deficit looming, the Governor and Legislature passed a budget and proposed propositions to attempt to fill the hole.  A special election has now been called for May 19, 2009 to consider six ballot propositions that were part of the budget negotiations.  With less than six weeks until voters weigh-in on the May 19 special election, the Orange County Business Council has released its positions on Props 1A through 1F.

OCBC PREPARES REGIONAL ECONOMIC RECOVERY PLAN FOR STATE
BTH coverIn response to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), California's Business, Transportation and Housing Agency asked several regional business organizations tthroughout the state to compile economic recovery plans. OCBC was selected to organize and develop the regional workplan for Orange County--highlighting regional opportunities for economic stimulus funding.

$400 MILLION IN FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDS ASSISTING CALIFORNIA'S UNEMPLOYED
State CapitolMore than $400 million in federal stimulus funds are now available to assist unemployed Californians in job-training and job-seeking activities. The federal funds will be distributed by the Employment Development Department to 49 local Workforce Investment Boards to help bolster services at the local Workforce Services Offices and One Stop Career Centers.

The $415 million nearly doubles the amount of Workforce Investment Act funds the federal government has allocated to California in the current fiscal year.

IRVINE CHAMBER SELECTS NEW PRESIDENT AND CEO
thartHart comes to the Irvine Chamber from San Rafael, Calif., where she has been president and CEO of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce since July 2005. Prior to leading the San Rafael Chamber, Hart was the executive director of the Northern California Engineering Contractors Association in Santa Rosa, Calif.

MERCY HOUSE FAMILY REDIRECTION PROGRAM HITS MILESTONE
mercy houseMercy House, one of Southern California's premier advocates of the homeless, providing a unique system of dignified housing alternatives, programs, and supportive services, announced that it has successfully placed its 100th family into the Family Redirection
Program. 

Under the program, when a homeless family arrives at either armory with children under the age of five, they are fed, and sent to stay in a motel, usually within an hour. Once settled, they are given gas and food vouchers, bus passes, and case management services, with the goal of moving them into permanent housing. The Family Redirection Program is funded by the Children and Families Commission of Orange County.

OC HOUSING SUMMIT TO ADDRESS "FACTS AND MYTHS" OF WORKFORCE HOUSING
housing summitHosted by the Orange County Housing Trust and titled "WORKFORCE HOUSING: FACTS & MYTHS," the 2009 Summit will focus on the status of affordable and workforce housing as we move through the midst of one of the nation's worst recessions. 

Co-hostsed by OCBC, the summit held on May 12 at UCI's Student Center will feature John K. McIlwain, Senior Resident Fellow and J. Ronald Terwilliger housing chair at the Urban Land Institute (ULI). McIlwain's responsibilities include leading ULI's research efforts to seek and promote affordable housing solutions, including development and housing patterns designed to create sustainable future environments for the nation's urban areas.

To date over 2,650 individuals have received education, training or employment services from Goodwill.
