Stone faced raised spa with natural rock brook to pool | |
Greetings!
Safety First for Enjoyable Swimming!
While we have fabulous swimming weather all year round in our little corner of Paradise, June brings the start of higher temperatures, kids home from school or visiting during summer vacation. Safety is of prime importance for you and your guests to enjoy your pool and spa.
In 2007 the "Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act" was passed by the US Congress to promote child safety in and around pools, spas and hot tubs. While the law enacts safety guidelines and safety education, of particular note, the bill addresses "Entrapment Prevention" and "Protective Barriers" (see sidebar at right) around pools and hot tubs. The FL Building Code (effective 10-1-08) provides that all residential pools follow the ANSI/APSP 7 Suction Entrapment Avoidance standard, which is consistent with the Federal law. It is unlawful for residential drain covers to be made or marketed that do not conform with anti-entrapment standards. Public pools must be retrofitted with appropriate anti-entrapment drain covers, too.
It is important to make sure that your main drain cover is securely installed correctly and properly designed according to the new code to eliminate hair entrapment & entanglement. If your pool was built before 2004, your drain cover will likely be of the older, unsafe design. If you would like to have Nautilus Pools replace the cover, our charge would be approximately $100-$150, depending on your specific circumstances, to have one of our employees make the dive. Well worth the cost to have a happy and safe swim experience!
By the way, if you're planning a pool remodel, it is mandatory that we upgrade the cover to the new code specifications. If you would like more information please feel free to call us (941) 624-5744.
Sincerely, Pete Coccaro Owner

"Protective Barriers"
The new laws calls for the "enclosure of all residential pools and spas by barriers to entry that will effectively prevent small children from gaining unsupervised and unfettered access to the pool or spa."
FENCING & GATES Mesh fencing should be at least four feet high completely surrounding the pool and have a self closing, self latching gate. All panels should remain in place when the pool is not in use. Fencing should meet the ASTM F 1908 standard.
DOOR & GATE ALARMS which are installed on the openings, will sound a loud alarm when opened and closed. Placing these on all windows and exit doors will alert you should a child leave the house unattended. Alarms should meet the Underwriters laboratories standard UL 2017 for residential water hazard alarm equipment.
PERIMETER & MOTION ALARMS Infrared systems installed around the perimeter of the pool sound an alarm when the beam is crossed. Or water motion alarms placed in or near the water, sound an alarm when the water is disturbed.
POOL COVERS that meet the ASTM F1346 Standard are available that completely cover the pool and block access to the water.
