A Message from the Superintendent

The Monroe County Board of Education recently passed a resolution supporting public education which you can find here.  The Board's resolution was made in light of an upcoming vote on the November ballot concerning an amendment to the Georgia Constitution that, if approved by voters, will give the state Legislature the right to establish charter schools, autonomous public schools that provide alternative modes of learning while taking funding and resources from public schools.
The amendment question to be on the November 6 ballot is: "Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended to allow state or local approval of public charter schools upon request of local communities?"  The Board of Education unanimously voted to oppose this amendment to Georgia's constitution, and the resolution stating that opposition has been forwarded to Georgia government officials.

Thank you to all staff who took the time to be present at the millage rate hearings.  The Board of Education's actions are recorded at the eBoard website at https://eboard.eboardsolutions.com/index.aspx?S=4117. The Board of Education's next regularly scheduled meeting is Tuesday, October 9 at 7 p.m.

A Message from Monroe County School System Nurses

Prepare for Flu Season with Preventive Measures

As students get their flu shots in the coming weeks from Monroe County Schools and the Monroe County Health Department, families are encouraged to take steps to prevent flu and stay healthy this winter.
Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at a higher risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.
The 2012-2013 flu vaccine will protect against the three influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the season. This includes an influenza A (H1N1) virus, an influenza A (H3N2) virus, and an influenza B virus.
The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year.
The "flu shot" - is an inactivated vaccine (containing killed virus) that is given with a needle, usually in the arm. The flu shot is approved for use in people older than 6 months, including healthy people and people with chronic medical conditions.

There are two different flu vaccines available for children:
A regular flu shot approved for people ages 6 months and older  and the nasal-spray flu vaccine - a vaccine made with live, weakened flu viruses that is given as a nasal spray. Like the flu shot, the viruses in the nasal spray vaccine do not cause the flu.
The nasal spray is approved for use in healthy people 2 through 49 years of age who are not pregnant.  People  who should not get the nasal-spray are: People with a medical condition that places them at high risk for complications from the flu, including those with chronic heart or lung disease, such as asthma or reactive airway disease; people with medical conditions such as diabetes or kidney failure; or people with illnesses that weaken the immune system, or who take medications that can weaken the immune system.  For more information on preventative measures for the flu, see http://www.flu.gov.
