KBSutton Elementary had its first

No Pencil- No Paper Day

No Pencil- No Paper Day at KBSES was a celebration of innovative teaching and learning through digital and tactile media and technology aimed to engage students and provide them with a rich, personalized educational experience. Teachers were asked to incorporate hands-on activities, mini project-based learning activities, and technology into their classrooms for one special day. The experience encouraged students and teachers to push the boundaries of learning as well as "go green" and save paper. To learn more about KBSutton's No Pencil-No Paper Day, visit their school website.

A Message from Human Resources

Professional Leave Policy is Changing July 1st

For a full copy of the new leave policy with professional leave changes, click here.

* The Board of Education fully believes that teachers need to be in their classrooms with their students as much as possible. They have asked school leaders to work on reducing the amount of time that teachers are not in the classroom.
*AESOP data shows that  teachers are missing significant amounts of class time for professional learning and principal assigned duties. When added to other types of leave taken by each employee, the days missed in class by teachers can take a huge toll on the students and their performance in our school system.
*In most cases, the system or the school has assigned teachers or other personnel to specific professional learning training sessions.
*To help the system and school monitor the amount of time teachers are out of the classroom, we are implementing a new leave policy.
*Employees may not take more than 3 days for professional leave (professional learning or staff development) in an academic year
*Employees may not take more than 3 days as principal assigned leave in an academic year
There may be exceptions but any exceptions must be approved by the superintendent or assistant superintendent for the grade level or department. If the employee exceeds the 3 day leave in the categories listed above and does not get prior approval for the requested leave days, the employee's pay will be docked.

A Message from Monroe County Counselors
Volunteers become Mandatory Abuse Reporters

Governor Nathan Deal recently signed into law mandatory reporting of child abuse is changing. As part of a criminal justice reform law signed by Governor Deal last month and effective July 1, the bill changes the definition of "child service organization personnel" to include volunteers.

Educators are already mandatory reporters, but this change in the law will now include volunteers at the schools, too. State Attorney General Sam Olens said anyone who works with children, including volunteers, should already feel obligated to report suspected child abuse, but the new law makes it a legal requirement.

Educators are already required to report suspected abuse, and educators' roles are not directly affected by this change in the law; however, educators will be adding this to the training agenda for new and existing volunteers.

The hope is that with this change in the law, more people will be made aware of their responsibility and that incidences of child abuse can be noticed and reported more quickly at places like after school care, churches, and civic groups and clubs so that children can live with confidence in their safety.

If you suspect a child is in danger in a school setting, contact school administration as soon as possible.  To report suspected abuse or neglect from 5pm-8am weekdays, or holidays and weekends, dial 1-855-GA CHILD (1-855-422-4453). As always, if you believe someone is in immediate danger, contact law enforcement by dialing 9-1-1.  As the school year begins, volunteers should look for more information regarding training for mandatory reporting. For more information, contact Rayceen King, Director of Student Support Services.

The Monroe County School District does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, or sex in its employment practices, student programs and dealings with the public.
