Young Georgia Author Writing Competition Winners

Each year, the Georgia Department of Education sponsors the Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition.  The purpose of this competition is to encourage students to develop writing that represents their best efforts, provide a context for schools to support and celebrate the writing successes of all students, and encourage and recognize student achievement in writing throughout Georgia.

Monroe County Schools have a process that ensures all students participate in the competition. Individual schools identify the winning entry for each grade level, which they submit to the Central Office.  These entries are then submitted to judges at the College/University level, who use the Georgia Department of Education's scoring rubric to identify a system winner for each grade level. These system winners are then submitted to the Georgia DOE for competition within our region.  School-level winners are recognized at the individual school; system-level winners will be recognized at the May meeting of the Monroe County Board of Education.

A Message from Counselors

Protect Your Child Online

SET GROUND RULES

*  Establish what sites the child can visit, how many text messages can be sent, and how you all agree that that the child can communicate online.

*  Research before you buy. Lots of handheld devices these days have webcam and internet capabilities in addition to being "gaming" devices.  Understand what technology is coming into your home.

MONITOR

* Supervise internet usage, and don't forget that phones, Nintendo devices, and more have internet capabilities.

*  Be proactive in knowing how your child is using technology.  Technology can not replace your time and attention as their parent or guardian.

COMMUNICATE

*  Talk to your child.  They may not tell you everything, but find out about their interests, their activities, their dreams, and this will help keep the lines of communication open about lots of things -- not just technology.

*  Do you know what games your child is playing?  Do you know who they are playing with?  Lots of games allow for "remote" play with people all over the world via the internet.

*  Have you played the games that they are playing?  Take a turn and get to know what they are experiencing.

*  Talk to your child about being safe online and respecting themselves and others through technology use.
