Hydrogen Peroxide:  No longer the all-purpose wound cleaner

For years we have relied on hydrogen peroxide's fizzing action to clean scrapes and cuts. However, many doctors agree that hydrogen peroxide should not be your go-to wound cleaner. Although it does a bandaidgreat job of cleaning out harmful bacteria, hydrogen peroxide also damages healthy cells that are important in the healing process.

Basic Wound Care

The goal is to prevent infection and encourage rapid wound healing.

  • The best choice for cleaning a wound is washing with soap and running water. The running water is ideal for helping to remove bacteria and debris.
  • Wounds contaminated with dirt, gravel, saliva, etc., have a much higher rate of infection. More brisk cleaning, even using tweezers or a wash cloth to remove the dirt, may be needed.
  • Scrubbing wounds is generally not helpful unless the foreign material can only be removed with scrubbing.
  • Avoid using iodine, alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide. We now know that these solutions are not an ideal method of cleaning. These are very strong and can harm the infection-fighting blood cells as well as new skin cells, resulting in more frequent infections and a longer healing time when compared to simple washing with water.
  • Any type of regular soap is okay to use. Just flush with water after soaping the area.

Bullying:  Resources for Parents and Students

Bullying is aggressive behavior that is intentional and involves an imbalance of power or strength. It is a repeated behavior and can be physical, verbal, or relational. While boys may bully others using more physical means; girls often bully others by social exclusion. Bullying has been part of school, and even workplaces, for years. More recently, though, technology and social media have created a new venue for bullying that has expanded its reach.

Cyberbullying is bullying that happens online and via cell phones. Websites like Facebook, MySpace, Tumblr and Formspring allow kids to send hurtful, ongoing messages to other children 24 hours a day. Some sites, such as Tumblr and Formspring, allow messages to be left anonymously.  At the heart of bullying prevention is communication.  Help your child feel comfortable enough to talk to you about bullying.  Here are some resources...
