CRCT Tips for Parents and Students

Mrs. Jennifer Jenkins' first grade students at KBSutton Elementary School recently created a "CRCT You Don't Scare Me!" video.  Watch their video here for great test taking tips from Mrs.Jenkins' students.

OAS:  A Resource for Teachers, Parents, and Students

The Georgia Online Assessment System provides students the opportunity to take on-line CRCT practice tests at school and at home. The Online Assessment System (OAS) can be used for a variety of purposes. Students can gain valuable experience in becoming self-assessors, learning to evaluate their own work and educational progress. Questions are similar to CRCT items in both format and content. http://www.georgiaoas.org.

Don't forget to...

  • Give your child encouragement. Praise him/her for the things done well throughout the year.
  • Ensure that your child has a well-rounded diet. A healthy body leads to a healthy, active mind. Make sure the child has a good breakfast on testing days, and everyday.
  • Keep the lines of communication open between home and school . Parents and teachers should work together to benefit the child.
  • Make sure your child is well rested on school days. Children who are tired are less likely to pay attention in class or to handle the demands of class work and tests.
  • Follow normal routines. Interruptions of normal routines may affect your child's performance.
  • Don't forget eyeglasses or hearing aids. If your child wears an assistive device, such as glasses or hearing aids, be sure he/she remembers to bring it and wear it during all testing sessions.

A Message from Guidance Counselors...

College Planning Checklist...

  • Start with you: Make lists of your abilities, social/cultural preferences and personal qualities. List things you may want to study and do in college.
  • Make sure you have an active account at http://www.gacollege411.org. Review the resources there as a family.
  • Learn about colleges. Look at their Web sites (www.collegeboard.com has links). Talk to friends, family, teachers and recent grads of your school now in college. Make a list of college features that interest you.
  • Resource check: Visit the MPHS, BSMS, or HMS counseling office and meet the counselors there. When will college representatives visit your school? (Put the dates in your calendar.) Examine catalogs and guides.
  • At school, sign up to take the PSAT/NMSQTR, which is given in October. If you plan to ask for testing accommodations (because of a disability), be sure your eligibility is approved by the College Board. Check with your school counselor.
  • Make a file to manage your college search, testing and application data. If appropriate (for example, if you're interested in drama, music, art, sports, etc.), start to gather material for a portfolio and/or keep notes regarding college information in an electronic file keeping program such as http://www.google.com/documents or http://www.evernote.com .
  • With your family, start to learn about financial aid. Read the Department of Education's Funding Your Education(about federal aid programs). Use the financial aid calculator at www.collegeboard.com to estimate how much aid you might receive.
