A Message from the Superintendent...

This past week, the legislators made a decision to move forward with House Resolution (HR) 1162 which would give the state the authority to establish charter schools using local tax payer dollars.  Last year the Supreme Court ruled the State Charter Commission unconstitutional.  Our legislators have decided it would be best to change the state constitution in an effort to "get their way".

Currently State Board of Education Rules allow for the creation of charter schools by pettion if requested and not approved by the Local Board of Education.  After passing the house, the resolution to amend the constitution moved to the Senate Youth and Education Committee. After quickly passing through this committee, the amendment has moved to the Rules Committee.  Without question, it will reach the floor for a vote quickly (more than likely this week).

Proposing and passing such an amendment deepens funding cuts depriving our boys and girls of a free appropriate education. Not funding QBE, a funding formula that is based on costs from 1985 with minimal adjustments over the last 27 years, has had enough negative impact on the education of Monroe County's students. Continuing to approve budget cuts, otherwise known as austerity reductions, further impacts our boys and girls. Passing HR 1162 supersedes Local Boards of Education elected to provide funding for their primary constituents - Pre-K through 12th grade students.

I typically do not play in the political arena.  Over the last few weeks I have written several emails to those who represent us on a state level.   If you would like an electronic version of the email I sent to our representatives, please send me an email to the following address requesting the information.

Respectfully Submitted,

Anthony D. Pack, Superintendent

A Message Highlighting http://www.donorschoose.org

DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students in need.  Here's how it works: public school teachers from every corner of America post classroom project requests on DonorsChoose.org. Requests range from pencils for a poetry writing unit, to violins for a school recital, to Donors Choose for a biology class. Then, the public can browse project requests and give any amount to the one that inspires the donor. Once a project reaches its funding goal, DonorsChoose delivers the materials to the school.

The donor gets photos of the project taking place, a thank-you letter from the teacher, and a cost report showing how each dollar was spent. If the donor gives over $50, the donor will also receive hand-written thank-you letters from the students.

DonorsChoose.org engages the public in public schools by giving people a simple, accountable and personal way to address educational inequity. Teachers, you can create your own DonorsChoose.org site and list of projects at https://secure.donorschoose.org/common/signin.html.
