Notes from the Regular Monthly Meeting of the Board of Education (February)

The Monroe County Board of Education met last night at 7 p.m. in the Board room at the MCS Central Office Building.

Middle School Consolidation:

During the meeting, the Board of Education approved the consolidation of the two middle schools into Monroe County Middle School with 6th grade at the William Hubbard Campus while 7th and 8th grades will be housed at the Banks Stephens Campus.  Mr. Jay Johnston will be the principal of Monroe County Middle School.

Mrs. Hopper, Principal of SHES, announced her retirement at a faculty meeting earlier in the day.  Dr. Marcy Hunt-Harris, current Principal of the Monroe County Achievement Center, was approved by the Board as the SHES Principal for the 2012-2013 school year. Mr. Steve Edwards was approved as the MCAC Principal for the 2012-2013 school year.

Backpack Buddies:

MCS has over 300 homeless students.  Some of these students go home over the weekend to little or no food.  Dr. David Hunter (Pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church on Zebulon Road), Ms. Jenni Carter (Children's Minister for TBC), and Ms. Gwen Byrd (Family Services Coordinator for MCS) presented a new initiative called Backpack Buddies.  TBC has collected enough funds to provide 18 students with food each the weekend.  The church will package food items in backpacks and deliver them to MCS on Thursday afternoons.  Ms. Byrd will ensure backpacks are delivered to appropriate students on Fridays.

Dr. Hunter and Ms. Carter indicated they were able to purchase food for students for approximately $3 per week.  TBC has started receiving donations to sponsor children.  If you would like to participate in the Backpack Buddies Ministry contact Ms. Jenni Carter at Tabernacle Baptist Church.  The phone number is 478-476-3507.  A donation of $39 will provide food for one child for the rest of this school year.

2012-2013 Academic Calendar:

The Board approved an amended calendar for the 2012-2013 school year.  A one page version of the calendar will be prepared and released by the end of next week.

Respectfully submitted,

Anthony D. Pack,

Superintendent of Schools
