A Note from Counseling Services...
Allison Mitchell, Counselor at Banks Stephens Middle School Would you like to know how you can help your child become successful in life with a great career? According to Dr. Lawrence K. Jones, there are eight positive ways that parents can increase career success for their child: - Encourage your children to get the most education possible. The more education a person gains will give them a chance to have a plethora of job opportunities.
- Strengthen their self-understanding. The more activities your child experiences the more he/ she will know about their own personal likes, dislikes and capabilities. You can explore the different personality tests online and choose one that you like.
- Develop their knowledge about work. Explore the internet and library to find different careers that your child may be interested in, or take a field trip to one of those places.
- Teach them decision making skills. Sit down and discuss how your child can make a positive choice and the consequences of making the wrong choices.
- Value gender equity and cultural diversity. Inform your child that he/she will need to be able to work well with people with other ethnic, social, and educational backgrounds.
- Become aware of career resources. You and your child should explore the career resources available in your area. Many colleges, high schools, and libraries have career resources for you.
- Help them become skill oriented. Parents need to help their children learn skills that are "marketable, transferable, and motivating". Your child will need the basic skills that are required of all high-performance employees in the 21st Century.
- Observe the effects of part-time work. Is this work helping your child or making it harder to complete his school work? According to Dr. Jones, studies have shown that teens who work more hours per week earn lower grade
s in school.

A Note from Human Resources...
AESOP IS COMING JANUARY 2012
TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS, PARAPROFESSIONALS AND OFFICE STAFF
Automated Substitute Management and Absence Management
Monroe County School System will begin utilizing AESOP to manage substitute placement and absence recording in January of 2012. AESOP is used in districts across Georgia and across the nation. AESOP was purchased to provide better absence tracking and reporting along with convenient procurement of substitutes.
ABSENCE CREATION Teachers register their absences at any time, either by accessing http://www.aesopeducation.com or calling 1-800-942-3767. Once a teacher registers an absence, Aesop immediately starts the hunt for an available substitute that matches the teacher's qualifications and preferences.
SUBSTITUTE PLACEMENT Substitutes who have had training and orientation for Monroe County School System (which now includes an AESOP orientation) can fill their work calendar by searching for available assignments anytime they wish, either by calling 1-800-942-3767 or on to http://www.aesopeducation.com. Aesop will also call substitutes based on preference lists managed by the school and by teachers.
You will find a link to the employee's AESOP quickstart guide here and the two page reference guide here. |
 | Schools recently participated in the annual Forsyth Christmas Parade. Banks Stephens Middle School won first place in the float competition. |

A Note from Curriculum ... January 4, 2012 is Professional Learning Day
Mrs. Angie Dillon Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education and Federal Programs
Dr. Mike Hickman Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Middle & High School Education
We are excited about the opportunity to again offer professional learning sessions hosted by teachers and staff members in the Monroe County School System on Wednesday, January 4th, 2012. The feedback we received from last year's sessions was very positive and we look forward to more great learning sessions this year. There are a few changes for this year. Paraprofessionals will be participating in the professional learning sessions this year. We think that the sessions will be a productive learning experience for all paraprofessionals in the district.
There will also be a change in how everyone registers for the courses. Each teacher and paraprofessional will register for two professional learning sessions on PLU Center. For information on using the PLU Center website, click here. Each session will last one hour. The directions for this process are attached. We recommend that each teacher/paraprofessional register for at least one professional learning session in a school other than your home school. This gives teachers and paraprofessionals the opportunity to visit and see other campuses within the district. Here is a list of course offerings, with descriptions, times, and locations, for your convenience.
Teachers and paraprofessionals need to be registered for sessions by Wednesday, December 14th, at 3:00 pm.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Amy Myers at the BOE (ext. 1022).
Thank you in advance for your help in making this a successful experience for everyone.
Note: Teachers participating in the ½ day Assessment for Learning (AFL) training on January 4th will not need to attend the sessions mentioned above.

A Note from Finance...
December Pay and Employee Self-Serve Document Fulfillment
Jackson Daniel, Assistant Superintendent for Support Services
Several weeks ago, the Business Services Office received notice from the State Department of Education that, due to state cash flow concerns, December QBE funds payments would not be transmitted to local systems until Dec. 30, 2011 (rather than the originally announced date of Dec. 16). Due to this news, we made plans to issue December's payroll on Dec. 30, rather than the last day of work before Christmas holidays on Dec. 16. To date, the state has not changed this payment date.
We have closely monitored the BOE's cash flow during the last six weeks, including the receipt of ad valorem taxes in Monroe County. This is always important, but especially in December, as we plan for the December payroll, tax and benefit payments, and for the repayment of a $3 million Tax Anticipation Note (short term loan) taken by the Board earlier in the fall.
Based on our analysis this week, we have determined that we will issue December payroll on Friday, Dec. 16. The good news is that BOE employees will be paid on the last day before Christmas holidays, but as with most matters, this is a double-edged sword. I want to remind you that the Dec. 16th payroll date means the next monthly payroll will be more than 6 weeks away - on Jan. 31, 2012.
December will be the first time we actively use the new Employee Self Service Portal to access Direct Deposit payroll notifications. If you haven't yet created your log-in for ESS, please check your email account for a message from Jackson Daniel, Assistant Superintendent for Support Services, for directions on using this service. |
