A note from your Superintendent...

Welcome to a great school year and welcome to Monroe County School System Messages, an electronic newsletter to communicate key messages.

Convocation was a great way to kickoff the school year!  Mrs. Pettigrew's encouragement to love the profession and establish relationships with your students was a powerful reminder of the impact we have on students' futures.  Our teacher of the year, Mr. Steve Mote talked to us about teamwork.  Who knew he was such a "quiet and humble" person.  His inspiration through humor and song was fantastic. Brad Cohen's message of acceptance and educating all, despite differences, reminds us of how our words and actions make a difference in the lives of ALL students regardless of the issues they bring with them to school each and every day.  I wish you, your students, and your family the best for this school year.

Convocation's closing remarks for your viewing.

Respectfully submitted,

Anthony Pack

Superintendent Monroe County School Sytem

CISCO phone graphic

Erate funds made possible the new CISCO phone system that has been deployed throughout the school system this summer.

What does this new phone system mean for you?

*  Improved service
*  Reduced operating costs
*  Increased voicemail capabilities
*  Increased "portability" as phones plug into network  drops
* Automated attendants to answer phones reducing labor associated with phone calls
Every teacher will now have a voicemail account and that voicemail account will even be accessible through your email.  NOTE:  If you receive a voicemail within your email, it is from CSICloudServices@voice.csik12.com.  You can listen to the voicemail by clicking on the PLAY button and listening to the message.
Teachers can expect training the second week of school to assist in setting up voicemail. Click CISCO Phone System User Instructions for a PDF explaining the new phones including how to set up voicemail.

ABCD Program (Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award)
Mr. Curtis Moore, First Recipient of the ABCD Awardcurtismoore

Just as we have honored a Teacher of the Year each spring, we now have a new tradition of honoring another segment of our working family.   The ABCD Program was rolled out during the last school year with the intent of recognizing those persons who go the extra mile to help or provide extra-special customer service to our stakeholders.  In most cases, the first contact our students, parents and community has with the school system is with clerical person in the office, with a custodian in the hallway, or with a bus driver out in the community. Those "first impressions" are vitally important to our stakeholders and to the school system.

In the short time the ABCD program has been in place, a number of Monroe County's support employees have been nominated for recognition.  These nominations came from working peers, parents, and community members. Mr. Curtis Moore is the first Monroe County Schools Support Services Employee of the Year.

Here are some of the comments from nominations for Mr. Curtis Moore:

"He always works until the job is done, often sacrificing personal time."

"He takes pride in being a Monroe County employee. No task or job request is treated any differently. They are all equally important to him."

"He is a positive role model to our students - he encourages the boys to tuck in their shirts, and he always makes sure his own shirt is tucked in as well."

"He gives teachers a sense of security.   When a stranger was on our hall, he kindly reminded the individual of the need to go back to the office to get a visitor's pass - even though he and the visitor knew each other."And finally, "He encourages and praises good behavior of the students, and serves as a male, role model to the boys in our building."

Thank you, Curtis Moore, for the work you do to support the children of Monroe County, and especially for the way you do it.

Jason Rogers of MEJA Construction Company has been an important facility and construction partner for the past several years, and he did not hesitate a moment in agreeing to sponsor our first ABCD/Support Employee of the Year honor.  Mr. Moore was honored with a barbecue grill and supplies through MEJA Construction and WalMart.

Keeping the MacBooks Going: Ways to keep your laptop healthy

mcbookThanks for your patience as Technology Team members had to reimage laptops.  It's a systemwide initiative that keeps the inventory as healthy as possible.  This process makes sure that virus protection is up-to-date, and it keeps inventory up-to-date as well.  It's year four of the MacBooks.  Is yours showing wear and tear (and maybe a little dirt too?)  Mr. Clean Magic Erasers (dry or just barely moistened) are great for taking the MacBook back to its original shine.  (Don't scrub too hard -- letters could disappear.)  You'll want to clean it when the laptop is turned off and unplugged.

Want to live in the Mac World?  If your MacBook is booting to Windows, you can hold down the CTRL key as it boots so that the two options, Windows and Mac, appear at the initial screen.
